A screenshot of a white-on-black terminal depicting a 19x19 go board in ascii graphics, with empty grid intersections as periods, and black and white as Os and #s
It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you

Google Starts Scanning All Your Photos As New Update Goes Live
Google wants its AI to see all the photos of "you and your loved ones." Billions of users must now decide.
“Take a moment to think before you dive in. That’s the best advice for Google Photos users, as the company confirms its latest update can scan all your photos to “use actual images of you and your loved ones” in AI image generation.”

my gut feeling is that having the kind of codebase that an LLM will generate, and the attendant lack of understanding caused by not writing the code yourself, will tend to make it harder to determine what is going wrong when you do have production incidents and so it will tend to make outages longer

AI is profoundly unpopular. A recent NBC News poll found that among 18-34 year-olds, AI's net favorability rating is -44. *Negative 44*. Those are basically serial killer numbers. It's not much better among women 18-49. (Men over 50 and upper class are the only ones who like AI, and just barely.)

From EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING
Choose your leaders
with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward
is to be controlled
by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool
is to be led
by the opportunists
who control the fool.
To be led by a thief
is to offer up
your most precious treasures
to be stolen.
To be led by a liar
is to ask
to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant
is to sell yourself
and those you love
into slavery.

Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real
Bixonimania doesn’t exist except in a clutch of obviously bogus academic papers. So why did AI chatbots warn people about this fictional illness?
Bloody hell. Researchers invented a disease, published two fake papers to see if LLM’s would ingest them and kick them up as fact — and then it broke containment and all the major AI’s bought in. Information pollution.

After three days, the most striking takeaway from talking with people here is how *angry* everyone is. Heartbroken, weary, yes, those things too. But above all else, they are furious, and not shy about it. When Minnesotans are volunteering their feelings to a stranger, you know it’s bad.

Did you hear the story of the one man $1.8 billion business built by AI as portrayed in the @nytimes.com? Turns out basically every aspect of that story is bullshit and the story should be retracted.

Our best-case scenario, ATM, is that our autocratic president is a bellicose liar who threatens genocide and war crimes to obtain totally undecipherable objectives.
Best case.

You have more in common with the people of Iran than you do with anyone in this administration, any member of the technocracy, anyone who is profiting from this war, or any billionaire. When you see Iranians forming human chains outside key infrastructure sites, you should feel a sense of kinship.

A few have suggested that some aspects of this mission--joy, international teamwork, diversity--are being played up to stick it to the hateful attitude of the administration. But I don't think it's that. I think it's just that those things are essential to and inseparable from a mission like this.

When it comes to writing, the process is the purpose. You don’t have to always like or enjoy the process, but if you don’t respect it enough to do it yourself, there is no purpose.
AI will never fill that void.

All empires fall, but/and I want a world where they stop arising in the first place.
I want a world without the systems of domination that make empires possible.

The. Rise. Of. Cognitive. Surrender.
Study finds that people who use GenAI chatbots rely on them 80% of the time, and develop almost no capacity to recognize when a chatbot is feeding them faulty information.

“Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you’ve got about a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies—God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.” Kurt Vonnegut

I don’t think we talk enough about how the foundational, most aspirational premise of the AI industry is “what if there was a human-level intelligence that didn’t have human rights.” Like. Exploitation is literally the whole point! Of COURSE they hold human life, intelligence and labour in contempt!

The Artistic Journey:
2021: celebrated as I published one of the best books of my career.
2025: watched Anthropic steal it, with millions of others, to train its model, without compensation.
2026: watched Anthropic sell that model, an AI killing machine, to the US government.

It’s not just Medicaid funding they’re withholding to MN. It’s food assistance, child care assistance, social services, job training, safety testing, public health, disaster relief. SNAP. Free lunch for kids in school.
They hate us for loving our neighbors, and are collectively punishing us for it.

whereas, the pitch for genAI is to spend gravity bending amounts of money and resources to make copies of things we already have. it's a completely baffling idea that inverts all prior ideas of what good technology or business looks like

historically, tech was an infinite money printer because you can write a program once and then sell it or its utility unlimited times. you can keep building atop existing things and not have to duplicate effort on remaking things that already exist
