The death of every person killed in school shootings and the assassination of Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband deserve the same national attention and flag at half-mast honors as the awful murder of Charlie Kirk.
This critique of RFK Jr’s incompetence is vastly understated. It’s not just that his views are “unscientific” but the conspiracy theories and “survival of the fittest” approach to public health that he endorses is likely to lead to the death and illness of many Americans.

The White House directive for the Smithsonian to "align messaging" with a political task force is a sanitized term for creating a ministry of truth. This is how democratic erosion accelerates. We must not be silent.

Next January I'm attending my first APA meeting in over a decade. I'm presenting a paper on "William James, Mysticism and Theosophy". I've been immersed in James's writings during the past year, and this is my first paper about his work. #philsky
I don't talk about it much but part of my work in the history of medicine focuses on medical and scientific imaging. For this work, familiarity with the history of anatomy is critical (if you aren't sure why, I recommend Foucault, The Birth of the Clinic).

4/ I hope a third political party will emerge that will capture the moderates in the Democratic and Republican parties that I think still make up the majority of Americans, and restore the notion that cruelty is a vice.
3/ the increase in funding for ICE to increase deportations (and expand Trump’s secret police force) all exemplify a rapid turn away from the vestiges of liberalism remaining in the US and towards totalitarianism.
2/ The GOP are not just cruel and ignorant people, they are misologists prone to excessive sentimentality. The horror and absurdity of the Alligator Alcatraz concentration camp; the massive funding taken away from an already inadequate social safety net;
1/ Cruelty is one of the worst vices in societies that value freedom and equality (a point from Judith Shklar). The disregard for the poor, sick, and vulnerable and the hatred of compassion that dominates the culture of MAGA is a “re-evaluation of values” that regards cruelty as the highest virtue.
“You cannot control outsiders (immigrants or would-be immigrants) without controlling insiders (citizens). The more vigorously you try to control immigration, the more you end up limiting the freedom of your citizens and violating equality and the rule of law.”
