Bluesky PBC is in tension between the comms tactics of Silicon Valley hypecraft and open web transparency.
The former model targets consumers, while the latter builds for community.
Taking the long view, trust is a more reliable competitive advantage than hype.
I took some time to pen out my thoughts after my call with @toni.bsky.team yesterday.

Sim, mas também teve isso rolando com outras
Mas falo mais num geral sem se preocupar muito com isso
like if the Bluesky team are actually Secret Evil Crypto Bros, then they’re quite frankly dog shit at it and should probably rethink their lives
the thing one needs to keep in mind about ATproto devs and Bluesky’s team is that regardless of your overall take on them, these are people who largely could be making a shit ton more money while getting yelled at way less doing something else: their motive really does not seem to be raw avarice
I just spent last weekend at the ATProto conference and met a bunch of the Bluesky team and a bunch of ATproto developers: horrible as this historical moment is, they all seemed like nice, smart, thoughtful people, and I feel at least a bit better about the future of the Internet now

Yooo the tool to import YouAndMe connections into your repo by @7hird.dev reached even Toni in just 2 days (max)
That's cool
(and he saw us fighting for the most connections lol it was fun)
The ref PDS doesn't do the clean up you recently added to yours? Asking for the near future when I will setup my own PDS, and my repo and blobs aren't the smallest 😅
Random PDS fact: On ref PDS, the user's repo export is about 1/4th the size of the repo's sqlite db on disk. Example of a user.
646M - sqlite db
157M - car export
Just did another COVID test at home
Negative again
Eeeeeh... I might need to go to the pharmacy a bit further from home to take a multiple test for influenza too, I'll do it tomorrow

The end of an era (perhaps?)
It's a lovely picture, I would use as avatar too (in a world where I wasn't so into commissioning art to use as avatar everywhere :v)
Actually, @flashes.blue already has an in-app feed builder that leverages @graze.social's API to let users create custom media-based feeds.
Also, @flashes.blue's 2 main feeds are driven by @graze.social
"Teams working across organizational boundaries, sharing structured data, and building on each other’s work with ease."
I know it's called "adversarial interop", but it actually feels like "community interop", at least right now
6.22 TB of VODs have been watched since we launched VOD JAM. We streamed at ~6 Mbps, so that's... 96 DAYS of AtmosphereConf that have been watched?!?!
I agree it's not good when they just announce an update through one dev account (and different updates might be posted by different devs)
I have a feed dedicated to Bluesky devs, and when that happens, even I can miss the announcement, so for other users? Just impossible to see
Again: comms problem
Me a hundred times a day: What a fantastic photo. Would love to repost. But there's no alt-txt so...

Anyway, I can understand criticizing the horrible communication done by multiple people from the Bluesky team, they keep digging their own graves instead of choosing better ways to communicate, it's frustrating to say the least 🙃
I would only worry if they didn't review and test the code done by AI
Still I use it a little bit when I see it will be helpful for what I need in that moment (like to help me figure out how to fix an error I'm struggling? it's awesome on that, saves me DAYS of work and struggling sometimes)
I'm a QA professional specialized into coding automated tests, and even though the company I work for is always pushing us to use their AI tools to code, I'm cautious with it, because I don't want to become rusty without exercising my brain and memory from time to time
I absolutely can't defend the behavior of some of them, they shouldn't be posting at all tbh
But I will also be fair that it's kinda recent the movent of them using Claude A LOT while doing their jobs
The app was up and running for years without it
Agency is the most important feature of the open social web
The best thing your work here can do is to educate on and expand agency using the tools in front of you. They're all there, you just need to use your creativity.
If you can't sell agency to people, they might as well be on a closed platform.
When Spill said, "Spill is for everyone" you 🫵🏾 had no vote
When Spoutible had a data breach, you 🫵🏾 had to wait for their team to fix the bug and couldn't fix it at the source code level
Debate is a part of democracy. Critique is a part of democracy
Then we vote on it
That's you 🫵🏾 doing your part
