I choose to believe this is an elaborate piece of performance art, because I refuse to accept that any humanities professor would accept this total abdication of our basic duties.

Why not just toss the students a Magic 8-Ball?

The academics who helped breathe new life into Notre-Dame Five years after a devastating fire, the Paris cathedral has finally reopened, with the help of a vast team of researchers

'When Notre-Dame reopened on 7 December, it was thanks, in part, to the efforts of 175 researchers with expertise across a range of disciplines: acoustics, art, data, history, archaeology, anthropology.' Example of why blue-skies research matters for 'real-life' problems we've not yet imagined. 1/2

The fact that everyone who has ever met Tulsi Gabbard thinks that she’s an insane idiot just shows that she’s going to shake things up as Director of National Intelligence

I've got 24 hours in Frankfurt coming up, and I'm looking for a spot to visit that is very dog friendly and super german. Think dog-friendly beer hall. Does anyone know if such a spot exists?

Did a talk on journalism to undergraduates. Learned very interesting stuff about how youngsters consume and interpret information, and how they judge the news media (trigger alert for any journalists out there whose core belief is that we're important).

The South Korea situation is already troubling in a deep, deep way. Watching our media cover this by only airing the official statements is disturbing and this is a pretty predictable roadmap to widescale tragedy.

Reading the pardon coverage...I don't think the significance of the Gaetz/Patel/Bondi nominations has sunk in. People still aren't getting what a politicized DOJ and FBI, with the power to arrest/bug/harass anyone for any reason, would be able to do.

South Korea President Yoon declares martial law South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday declared martial law in an unannounced late night address broadcast live on YTN television.

Holy cow, South Korea's president just declared martial law.
Claims it's to deal with "shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces," but there doesn't appear to be any big North Korean activity.

Sure looks it's about a domestic political dispute, and soldiers are blocking access to the parliament.

‘A place of joy’: why scientists are joining the rush to Bluesky

There are already many articles for which there is more attention on Bluesky than on other comparable micro-blogging sites, meaning the academic community and the general public have clearly adopted Bluesky as one of its core places to disseminate and discuss new research.

A Place of Joy.

👇🎯 It’s one thing for everyone in 🇺🇸 to decide Trump is above the law & no one who swore oaths to country & Constitution can stand up to him. But the rest of the world isn’t going to behave like that, & so we will waste a generation rebuilding our incinerated credibility in international relations.

My hot take as someone who analyzes election data for a living is that Nate Silver approaches election analysis from the perspective of a toxic bro & long ago jumped the shark in too often giving vibes-based analyses over data-based ones. He's best blocked & ignored on any social media site.

The second largest source of imported tomatoes? Canada.

My one constructive criticism on BlueSky, as a community: we need to “like” less and “retweet” more. In the absence of an algorithm, that’s the way we find each other and reward good content.

Talked it over and I think we are doing sushi instead of turkey for Thanksgiving this week. Very excited now.

Non-profit creates opt out forms against State Superintendent Ryan Walters A non-profit called Defense of Democracy has created opt-out forms for parents who want their child to have no interaction with Ryan Walters in any capacity, which includes the recent prayer video.

If you are in Oklahoma or know others that are with school age children, please pass this along to them. Defense of Democracy created opt-out forms for Ryan Walter’s forced bible instruction. Let’s keep getting in good trouble!
