Just because the US government is shut down, it doesn't mean your voice is. Contact your representatives and tell them what NASA science means to you. Your voice will help to inspire the generations that come after us. Learn more here: www.planetary.org/save-nasa-sc... @planetarysociety.bsky.social
NEW: It was a delight to contribute to @quantamagazine.bsky.social's stunning new series on climate science! Naturally, my story tended apocalyptic: will Earth ever become a climate hellhole like Venus, the most extreme world in the solar system?
www.quantamagazine.org/why-is-venus...
Venus is a Solar System enigma.
Although Venus is similar in size and distance from the Sun to Earth, it has evolved very differently from our planet.
Our #Envision mission will aim to solve some of the puzzle by thoroughly studying our closest neighbour.

(2/4) 🚀 The #first 3D geodynamic models of Venus rift tectonics reveal 5 modes of rifting. Venus' rifts may be active and shaped by evolving or laterally variable lithospheric and crustal properties:

If you are interested in supporting NASA science and exploration, and saving it from capricious budget cuts, here's one thing you can do: sign this petition being sent to Senate and House members of their respective appropriations committees. Two days left to sign!
www.planetary.org/advocacy-act...
We're going to learn some tough stuff today about the White House's proposed budget for fiscal year 2026—including what they have in mind for NASA.
I'll share what I hear, but remember:
CONGRESS decides how much money NASA gets, not the White House.
So whatever happens today, the fight continues.
NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.
How bad will it be? Catastrophic.
Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.
But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.
Speak up now before it is too late.
(inflation adjusted $-s below)
Write and urge your Senators to co-sign Mark Kelly's letter supporting NASA science: planet.ly/senateletter
Deadline is FRIDAY.
The study was posted today in Science Advances and was co-led by @unibe.ch researcher @planetaryanna.bsky.social and University of Maryland Baltimore County + NASA Goddard researcher Gael Cascioli.

🔎🌌 A #unibern and #NASA team shows that the interior of #Venus is not tectonically "dead" as originally thought.
⭕ Many of the huge ring-shaped structures on Venus hint at #tectonic processes beneath the surface 👇:

Yes, the image automatically linked to the JGR:Planet's website is that of the journal's cover - not the paper, cannot adapt it!
Previously published #Venus coronae databases, however, remain inaccessible to the public and/or incomplete -- our new database uses clear ID criteria to define 740 (!!) corona features on Venus, which is much higher than ever reported!
agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
"#Coronae" are defined by a (partial) quasi-circular ring of closely spaced concentric fractures. They are hugely abundant on #Venus' surface and considered key for Venus' tectonic and volcanic history ⚒️🌋

New paper: doi.org/10.1029/2024... ⚒️🔭🧪🌋🪐
"Coronae on Venus: An updated global database and insights into morphology, spatial distribution, geological setting, and lithospheric properties"
presents a new, publicly available database of 740 corona structures on #Venus, much more than ever recorded!

It was such a pleasure to attend #LPSC25 last week and present my latest #Venus #science work, some originating from my time at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory; @caltechseismo.bsky.social. These presented studies will likely soon result in some exciting publications (stay tuned...)!
Next is Anna Gülcher @planetaryanna.bsky.social on Diverse Tectonic Processes at Coronae on Venus as Revealed by Joint Analysis of Modeled Topography and Gravity.
