🗳️ CRAMLINGTON SOUTH WEST RESULT

🌳 Conservative GAIN from ➡️Reform UK

A significant result in Northumberland — suggests the 2025 Reform surge may not be uniform across the region.

Murton, Reform, and the Battle for County Durham’s Political Soul Labour’s by-election gain in Murton is about more than one ward. It is the clearest sign yet that Reform UK’s historic Durham breakthrough may be entering a more fragile second phase.

By-election results are never just about who won. The bigger clues are often in the swing, turnout and where each party’s vote moved. That’s usually where the real story starts.

A really important argument. I’ve been looking at this through a North East lens too — fragmentation is making the weaknesses of FPTP much harder to miss.

A really important argument. I’ve written on this from a North East angle as well — once politics becomes more fragmented, FPTP looks much less effective at producing genuinely representative outcomes.

Worth reading.

I’ve been arguing for a while that Britain’s increasingly fragmented politics is putting real strain on FPTP.

That is as true in the North East as anywhere else.

More of this debate is coming.

Murton is a reminder that North East politics is still shifting beneath the surface.

The big question now is which battleground comes next — and whether Labour, Reform UK or others can build momentum from here.

I can not find you the answer to that, I am guessing that once appointed they would stay as such. Like a Government losing it majority and becoming a minority government. But I have contacted the Speaker's Office to see if there is any rules or president on this matter.

Big question after Murton:
Was this a genuine warning sign for Reform UK in County Durham — or just the kind of mid-cycle by-election result that’s easy to overread?

A fascinating constitutional detail in this scenario: if Labour and the Lib Dems were tied as the largest non-government party, it would be for the Speaker to determine which party is recognised as HM Official Opposition.

A small constitutional wrinkle here: if this projection produced a Labour–Lib Dem tie for second, it would be for the Speaker to decide which party is recognised as HM Official Opposition in the Commons.

One of the key points from Murton: Labour recovered a seat in a ward where Reform UK had wiped them out in 2025.

That makes this more than a routine by-election result — it’s an early test of whether Reform can hold what it won.

“My vote doesn’t matter? Why women deserve a fairer electoral system Too many women still feel their vote doesn’t matter. A fairer electoral system could change that

A thoughtful contribution to the electoral reform debate.
Questions of representation are not only about who wins power, but also about whether the electoral system leads people to feel their vote really counts.

Murton matters beyond one ward.
Labour has shown Reform UK can be beaten in defence in County Durham — but one result alone doesn’t settle the wider question.
The real test is whether this becomes a pattern.

Durham may be the exception for now — but there are signs of slippage here too. Reform have now lost 2 of the 3 Durham by-elections where they were defending, and they’ve also had 4 defections on the council: 3 to sit as independents, and 1 to Advance UK.

One striking Murton detail: Julie Griffiths lost her seat to Reform UK in 2025. Now she has won it back for Labour.

My latest North East Elects piece is on why that matters beyond one ward.

Groton & Denton Isn’t Just a By-Election — It’s a Warning for Westminster Fragmentation is rising — and First-past-the-post is starting to crack

Really interesting point. Gorton & Denton made me think AV deserves a more serious look in a fragmented party system. I wrote a piece on that after the by-election: substack.com/@northeastel...

It’s time to end Britain’s first-past-the-post election lottery The Gorton and Denton by-election confirmed just how capricious our electoral system has become

💥 Professor Vernon Bogdanor writes for @financialtimes.com:

"An electoral system should do two things: ensure that the majority rules and that significant minorities are adequately represented.

First Past the Post achieves neither."
