Since COVID, maybe even before, there’s been incredible levels of cognitive dissonance between university emails that go out to the general public and the direct experiences of those employed by the institutions

If you have the privilege to review grants, your job is to evaluate the science and the ability of the team to carry out the proposed research. If other stuff impacts the ability of the team to carry out the proposed research, that also matters.
That’s not what is ha happening here though.
Real ones know why I love NIST with all my heart.
I honestly don’t understand why they don’t cover all canals with solar panels (aside from money…)
Seems ludicrous to have open canals moving water in ARIZONA
But the other innings must be better, right? Right?
Extremely proud of my student Will Hamilton and the work we've done to characterize Wolbachia ankyrin repeat proteins. TLDR: they do interact with specific Drosophila proteins! journals.asm.org/eprint/KXVNI...
Congrats Will!
Thanks for speaking out!
Those of us doing research related to women’s health have been hit particularly hard by the govt’s sabotage of the NIH. I spoke to WaPo for this piece, as painful as it was to discuss the reality my lab is facing. www.washingtonpost.com/science/2026...
Every Cyberpunk author: In my book I invented the concept of the evil tech megacorp as a cautionary tale.
Palantir: At long last, we have created the evil tech megacorp from every classic cyberpunk novel.
Great news from the lab - we’ve been awarded a MIRA (R35)!
This grant provides 5-year support for our research program. We are very grateful to NIGMS/ #NIH for supporting our research. We will be hiring a research technician and a postdoc.

I'm not joking when I say mRNA technology is more important than "AI" and it's a tragedy we're throwing billions into one while our government is aggressively defunding the other.
Ellen was one of my grad school professors.
For all of the comments in the thread reflecting on her genuineness through their experiences with her on social media, please know that genuineness was also just as true in real life.
New mRNA vaccine research has basically been shelved by this administration.
We know that vaccines basically eliminate cervical cancers.
The prospect of expanding this to additional cancers is incredible. Particularly the most lethal ones like pancreatic.
I'm very sorry to tell you that Dr. Ellen LeMosy passed away after a short illness this past Thursday.
This is her sister. Ellen will be sorely missed.
A fair-skinned red-head person who has discovered he has a predisposition for melanoma only after unleashing AI agents on his genome.

On April 18, 1905, William Bateson introduced the term “genetics,” giving identity to the study of heredity and variation. 🔗 Learn more: buff.ly/Yuqq3aC
I'm struck by the bravery of this student and the fantastic way the union handled this allegation. What a model for all of us to follow in terms of how to show up for our members.
Postdoctoral Scholar position in the Coaker group University of California, Davis We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to join our research program focused on immune receptor engineering and spatial analyses of plant pathogens interactions using computational and imaging approaches. The position will involve integration of molecular, imaging, and computational approaches. Relevant publications from the laboratory include Nature Plants (2025, PMID: 40721669), Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2024, PMID: 38814867), and Cell Reports (2023, PMID: 37342910). https://www.coakerlab.org/ Qualifications: • Ph.D. in plant biology, molecular biology, genetics, computational biology, or a related field • Strong background in genomics and/or computational biology • First author publications in peer-reviewed journals • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment • Experience in plant innate immunity is preferred Application Instructions: The position is initially available for two years, with the possibility of extension based on performance and funding. Salary is based on the University of California postdoctoral salary scale (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2025-26/represented-oct-2025-scales/t23.pdf). The salary range for this position is $69,073-$82,836 US Dollars/year. Review of applications will begin June 1, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit a CV, a brief statement of research interests (~1 page), and contact information for three references to glcoaker@ucdavis.edu. The research statement should describe your previous work, how your expertise aligns with ongoing research in the lab, and potential future research directions.
We are hiring! We’re excited to recruit a postdoc to our lab at UC Davis to work on plant immune engineering and single-cell analyses of plant pathogen interactions. Apply by June 1. Please repost. www.coakerlab.org/postdoctoral...
I am so excited to share our new findings with you! We provide the structural evidence for a direct protein-to-DNA information pathway, showing how a bacterial enzyme 'reads' its own structure to 'write' DNA. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
How every layer of science's "self-correcting machinery" failed when Iva Veseli and I simply wanted to reproduce the findings of a high-profile study on gut microbiome and autism:

A form, a bracketed rectangle with movable type carefully laid out in rows of varying sizes. Stolen from a Medium article: "The original movable type. Image source: Flickr, purdman1"
Hot off the presses!
Some people think I'm a stereotype of a nerd 🤓, but isn't that kind of a cliché?
Let's talk about how "stereotype" & "cliché" were invented by the printing press.
Movable type depended on typesetters putting little letter blocks (a 'sort' or 'type') in 'forms'.
Binning Singletons needs some help to get to #ASMicrobe this year. You can donate directly through Venmo or reach out if your organization can become a sponsor.
Help out if you can! We need to raise at least $2000 just to have the program this year. Shirts and mixer will be more but I’m just focusing on travel expenses for the time being. #MicroSky #AMR #ASMicrobe 🦠🧪
go home biology, you’re drunk.

If you paid taxes for 2025, you likely paid:
$124 — school lunch & nutrition programs
$49 — diplomacy to prevent wars
$19 — USPS
$19 — Federal Aviation Administration
$18 — national parks
and
$4,049 — weapons and war.
These priorities are hurting us all. We need change. #TaxDay
I love all you little people who live in my phone and I visit you daily and yet I just cannot imagine caring enough about this dumb website enough to pay to ddos it. I mean, come on.
LLMs are very powerful tools in computational biology, if you're willing to take your time, use them to check and stress test your work, and learn. But very very foolish tools if you use them just to take shortcuts and move faster than you ought to.
