"Officials from the state Department of Health tried to inspect most recently on March 20, according to the agency. The GEO Group, which runs the detention center, turned them away. This was the ninth unsuccessful inspection attempt since 2023."

efore founding the Corrections Corporation of America, a $1.8 billion private prison corporation now known as CoreCivic, Terrell Don Hutto ran a cotton plantation the size of Manhattan. There, mostly black convicts were forced to pick cotton from dawn to dusk for no pay. It was 1967 and the Beatles’ “All you need is love” was a hit, but the men in the fields sang songs with lyrics like “Old Master don’t you whip me, I’ll give you half a dollar.” Hutto’s family lived on the plantation and even had a “house boy,” an unpaid convict who served them. https://time.com/5405158/the-true-history-of-americas-private-prison-industry/

In a shocking twist, "Alligator Alcatraz" is a concentration camp
www.scrippsnews.com/politics/imm...
I've studied so many concentration camps through history that held vulnerable people in just this kind of crowded squalor. You demonize people, you demand more arrests, this is what you get. It already has its own budget and its own momentum, and is on track to go much further, unless we stop it.

“Some have felt forced to work in the kitchen’s detention center, getting paid $1 for an eight-hour work shift that at least allows them to make the meals slightly better, they said. In 2025, the Department of Homeland Security awarded over $811 million in contracts to the Geo Group…”
Growing up with opportunities to see our country through the eyes of people who sacrificed to come here — often at great personal risk — fostered a deep sense of gratitude and patriotism that I suspect the folks pushing these vile narratives can't relate to.
Immigrants make America great.
ICE has been really good at catching wind of these unannounced visits in other cities recently and flying all the captured migrants out beforehand.
But not today. Well done catching them, Congresswoman. We should expect that all of the detention centers are this bad when they aren’t tipped off.

ICE just released new detention statistics. First update in about 2 months.
As of April 4, 2026, ICE was detaining 60,311 people across the United States.

Thank you--really important work.
Record numbers of people are dying in ICE detention, and it isn't just because record numbers of people are being detained. The death rate per 10k people detained has skyrocketed under this administration.

Nightly population Detained by ICE, National. Peaked at 70,696 on Jan. 15, 2026. Midnight population dropped to around 61,500 by March 10.
I'm in the middle of writing up a "how I made these charts" post, but I'll take a moment to share a few that show specifically where ICE increased/decreased the detained pop. over the last 2 months.

Chickening out of a crime-against-humanity threat is good, actually.
Threatening a crime against humanity—or being silent or even supportive when someone in your party threatens one—is extremely bad, and tells us everything we need to know about you, forever.
