I work with headteachers. I find that they don't tend to be particularly kind to themselves when we start out. It takes time for self-kindness to grow, but when it gets established, amazing things start to happen ๐

So sorry to read this. Hope you can give a bit of space to all that tough stuff ๐
Agreed! Banter Books ๐

Really interesting post and something I've reflected on a lot over the years. I love where I live and feel I belong here, but I'm pulled towards being a good citizen of the world rather than Britain.
I really ageee that visibility can be problematic. I've experienced it myself, and it often comes up in coaching. I think you have to get strategic about how you want to be visible.
Tired but wired - nervous system confusion ๐ i know it well!
Then, next time you're experiencing a difficult emotion, try putting your hand to your heart for a moment. That might feel weird the first time you do it, but stick with it.
Then, visualise what it might look like. Maybe you'd offer yourself some kind words when things are tough. Maybe you'd be quicker to stop for a rest when you're feeling tired.
Even if you're not feeling it, go through the motions.
Start by setting the intention that you want to be kinder to yourself.
Headteachers
If you want to be kinder to yourself but find it really hard, here's a great place to start โฌ๏ธ
Start with small steps. It will get easier the more you do it!
Watching headteachers starting to be kinder to themselves โค๏ธ reminds me of seeing someone fumbling through a dark tunnel who suddenly remembers they have a torch in their bag and switches it on. ๐ก
Whose wisdom would he take out there onto the ledge with him?
How could he create opps for moments of stepping back into safety to regain strength and energy?
My reflection on this: as a sector, we need to make the ledge feel wider and less scary to step onto.
A dep head I coached recently said the thought of moving into headship made him feel like he was stepping out onto a ledge. (Great metaphor!)
We explored how that step might feel less daunting. โฌ๏ธ
That looks great ๐
Close to us! I'm sure you'll love it there ๐
Yes saw that and it was great to hear him ๐
I'm so pleased to have been mentioned in @drjessm.bsky.social 's review column in @schoolsweek.bsky.social even though it took me a while to realise ๐!
The blog was the result of several years of reflection. Funny how things that you've been puzzling about suddenly slot into place one day!
That's so good. Great way to get early engagementโบ๏ธ
Had a nice day off with mum in Durham yesterday. Visited The Story - a fabulous new local history centre. (Brilliant for school trips I'd say, NE teachers)
Love this picture of 4 Durham policemen c.1864. You wouldn't mess with these guys ๐ซฃ
Having been off Twitter for a while, I haven't been seeing your cheeseboards. This definitely seems like an upgrade ๐ very tantalising!
That's a beauty ๐
Thanks for sharing. This feels important ๐
A lovely day in London with leaders from Rose Lane ๐
Is it really August?
Sharing a blog that's really relevant for leaders starting to think about the return to work and wanting to find a better work-life harmony in the new academic year.
