So sorry to learn about the death of Carolyn McCarthy. Worked closely with her in 2007 after the Virginia Tech Massacre to get the NICS Improvement Amendments Act passed to strengthen the background check system.

Democratic NC Gov. Josh Stein vetoes bill to end concealed gun permit mandate Gov. Josh Stein vetoed a Republican bill allowing people to carry a concealed handgun without a permit.

VICTORY IN NORTH CAROLINA! We’re thrilled to celebrate a huge win: Governor Josh Stein has VETOED dangerous permitless carry legislation that would have allowed people 18+ to carry concealed, loaded guns in public—without a permit, a background check, or any safety or live-fire training. #NCPol 🧵

Appreciated being asked by Gary Snyder to discuss, along w/ @careyhamilton.bsky.social, the late-night, non-debated, move by the Indiana Legislature to take away the ability of #IU alums to elect three of the nine IU Trustees.

Very sad to learn that one of our IU Civic Leaders Center “alums”, Asra Hussain, from our 2016-17 cohort, was a passenger on the plane that crashed into the Potomac River last night. Asra graduated from the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University in May 2020.

Who would have thought that “lawmakers” getting together to pass legislation were actually passing “laws”? You learn something new everyday! #Congress #Constitution

How Trump seeks to destroy the four major pillars of resistance But we lose only if we stop fighting

Trump and his MAGA allies are already targeting the four major pillars of resistance to Trump during his first term.

As we prepare for Trump’s second regime, it’s important to do what we can to protect and fortify these four centers of opposition.

Looks like I’ll have a lot more modern tie-ins to topics we cover in my next “Legal History & Public Policy” class at Indiana University that focuses on protest & dissent -from Adams’ Alien & Sedition Acts, Jefferson’s Embargo enforcement, the charges against Margaret Sanger, and the Korematsu case.

Holding on to our humanity in an inhumane world Social media has made it easier than ever for us to surrender our values and empathy to mob mentality

“When we look away from or cheer on the death of another human—even if our excuse is that we think that their suffering is retribution for acting inhumanely—we betray our own humanity.“

A new twist in #2A law from the S.D.N.Y. yesterday - Mills v. NYC, 2024 WL 4979387 (Dec 4, 2024). It was a 2A challenge to a number of local gun regs - a 90-day waiting period, limit on how many guns one can carry at a time in public, licensing fees, etc. No actual "infringement" here, ct says 1/2
