People sleeping outside on benches and going to the bathroom on the sidewalk are problems of the social safety net failing and it is so much cheaper and easier to just expand the safety net than to punish people who fell through it.

a work friend who was a first-line supervisor also hated semi-annual reflections time; her experience was that the good employees all had imposter syndrome and the bad ones all had Dunning-Kruger.

It is, somehow, semi-annual reflections time at work again

Friends, I cannot articulate in words how much I disdain this exercise

they like Trump and want to help him rule us. Two of the things that helped Republicans rule us more than anything else were in 2012 and 2022 when Republicans under a Dem Presidency and Senate were able to win the House only through more efficient gerrymandering and stymie Dem Presidencies.

Today was a fine reminder that if you want things to happen in another country, you should give the money to the people in the other country to do the things. If you're afraid of corruption and just send your own people to that country and pay them instead, just looks like imported corruption.

A huge problem in Bed-Stuy, where I live, is deed theft. A very organized and courageous group is bringing attention to this, but the battle is hard.

Last week, they arrested a victim of this, district leader candidate Carmella Charrington. This morning, they arrested our CITY COUNCIL MEMBER.

Whatever happened to the ozone hole, acid rain and DDT? The environmental crises of the past often seem to disappear—have problems like acid rain and smog been solved?

Happy Earth Day! 🌍

We've got several stories @sciam.bsky.social, including a look I took at where some blast-from-the-past environmental issues stand. (Hint: not all are in the past, though there has definitely been progress.) 🧪

in Ohio there used to be a district running along the shores of Lake Erie from Cleveland to Toledo, "contiguous" nature maintained only by a bridge at one point, because Republicans wanted to make incumbents Dennis Kucinich and Marcy Kaptur primary each other.

as it becomes clear that Yes has won in VA and gerrymandering will pass, a message to Republican voters:

you brought this on yourselves

you convinced the most fairness-obsessed, That Wouldn’t Be Fair-minded voters in the country to affirmatively vote to put you in the dumpster

you earned this

I would submit that a gerrymander by politicians saying fuck the voters and one by voters saying fuck the politicians are two wholly different animals

Digital art of a turtle-koi fish creature with a lily pad and pink lotus flower on its back, mimicking the vague shape of a turtle shell. A small frog rests on their lily pad as drops of water catch on the petals of the lotus flower. A tadpole swims shortly behind them. The background is a greyish blue with swirls and sparkles.

One big political divide is between people who believe germs cause disease and people who believe Those People cause disease. It was pretty evident right away during the pandemic

Stop sharing that article re: nuclear codes where the person quoted is fucking LARRY JOHNSON who is not credible at all. He was the guy stating that there was secret tape of Michelle Obama calling white people "whitey" at her church, lol.

"move fast and break things" isn't something that most people want, they want their programs to be stable and unbroken

God, this gives me flashbacks to high school when big-chested girls got dress code violations while wearing the same things as smaller-chested girls. We were all wearing the same styles, and smaller-chested girls never got pulled aside. Your body was what got you in trouble, not the clothes.

I thought this point Eric made about how libraries are early introductions to a social contract was really interesting, too:

The next administration must make clear that any immigrant, refugee, or asylum seeker wrongly deported, exiled, or otherwise mistreated by this administration will be readmitted with an expedited path to citizenship. Send a plane to get them.

We can't undo the damage. But we can do something.

to be clear this was already wildly fucking illegal by any standard employment regulation of ethical service

That said I feel like 'NY beats Boston in regulation' kind of works out to 'Aerin Frankel has the flu on game day'. All the goalies are god-tier but she and ARD are on a whole other level.

out of the remaining games: NY wins both in regulation, Toronto beats Ottawa in regulation, Ottawa loses to Boston. The three way tie (@ 40 points) comes in if Ottawa loses to Boston in OT. Otherwise NY and Toronto tie. Either way New York has it on the tiebreakers.

Alright, I’m home now so here’s the Norm update. Yesterday at 4pm, I got a text from a family I’ve been helping who had a loved one abducted a couple of days after Renée Good’s murder. This was the family that Norm Nation kept from being evicted (and you delivered). ICE had released their loved one.
