Gardening team members Abigail Pavitt and Steve Welburn took this absolutely stunning photo today as they worked in the cemetery. It’s so atmospheric and a stunning shot of the bluebells giving us quite a show.

This simple plaque marks the resting place of Harriet Raincock. Sadly, her original gravestone was demolished in the 1970s but hers was first burial in the cemetery five days after its consecration on 7 December 1837.

April 9, 1799, birthday of Mary Ann Mantell née Woodhouse.
Together with her husband Gideon Algernon Mantell she discovered in 1821-22 the first tooth of an herbivorous dinosaur - Iguanodon. She also illustrated the discovery (like other geological works published by her husband).

A sitting male figure with his head pointing to the right. His hair is parted and he has a waxed moustache. He is wearing a brocaded corset with an intricate design. A medallion is around his neck falling down to his chest. His arms are bare and he has stockings on his legs. Text at the bottom of the photo indicates who the figure is and where they will be performing in Birmingham.

A 1914 competition map: Changing the map of Europe

8 years ago, at the British Library, I first saw this map: an FT reader competition to predict the boundaries of Europe after WW1. I made a note to find out more one day - which ultimately led me last month to this tomb in West Norwood cemetery. You can read more here: www.ft.com/content/79a4...
