Whatâs your best tip for overcoming writerâs block, or, as I prefer it, writerâs inertia?
(The end is in sight, but I keep getting distracted!)
We have a Teaching Fellow in Classical Language and Literature (Latin) job that is now open; fixed term from Sept 26 to June 28. Deadline is tight (24th April). The post covers a colleague's career break. There's some team teaching with me; happy to answer any questions folks might have.
(And yes, I know these are different wars).

Help! My link to the Oxford Classical Dictionary abbreviations page no longer works! Can someone share a working link or point me to another online resource?

Thank you!
Clearly bell hooks, Audre Lorde, Gloria AnzaldĂșa ⊠who else belongs on this list?
Iâm looking to build out my methodological reading list.
Who are some of the âcanât missâ thinkers, and what are some of the most reliable primers you would recommend for reading up on feminist and / or postcolonial theory?
(Or related approaches!)
Nice!
I would say that his work played a big part in opening up the ways that we look at Dionysos and think about the intersections of myth and cult. Definitely worth a read!
You might also be interested in what people have said about the Lenaia vases. I like Sarah Peirceâs article âVisual Language and Concepts of Cult on the âLenaia Vasesââ.
Albert Henrichs is important for challenging the myth-ritualist readings that really exaggerated the âdark allureâ of Dionysos and (re)focusing attention on historical Maenad practices. Not sure what you can get without institutional access, but he has a number of useful articles!
The inbox this morning is giving me emotional, stress-related whiplash.
What is your best advice for structuring and writing conclusions of dissertations or books?
(Itâs my least favorite part of writing articles and papers, so this stage of the âbig projectâ feels very daunting).
I recently talked to a colleague who has been in VAP positions for the past 5 years. She says the market this year is worse than it was in 2020. Itâs definitely terrible across the board.
I donât have it off the top of my head, but I believe itâs printed on the badges!
Some of the SCS panels are associated with the wrong groups and most of the sessions (from the program view) donât appear to list the actual presentations!
Iâll probably be looking at the digital program on the SCS website for most of the meeting this yearâŠ
I also complain about the app every year. This year will be no exception as it actually seems worse than usual!
I will fully put my weight behind âsacrifishiesâ.
Interesting! It seems that this may have been more widespread than I was led to believe. Thank you!
I wonder where Burkert got it⊠obviously I have some reading up to do if I want to follow this rabbit hole!
This reflection being inspired by my afternoon musings on what an Ancient Greek might order if they walked into a sushi shop.
Years ago, I was told that Ancient Greeks did not sacrifice fish, with the exception of tuna. I think the assumption was that the Greeks sacrificed any red meat, and tuna is a particularly red or bloody fish.
Is this true? Can anyone working on sacrifice chime in?

No one says to legit business owners, "hey I see there's an underground market selling toxic knock-offs of your product: how will you incorporate the toxic product AND protect your customers against its harms?" But apparently it's fine to make this suggestion to educators with respect to AI.
Publication news! Very excited to share that this special issue of Mouseion, with a focus on "Breaking New Ground with Comics and the Ancient Mediterranean World," was just published! Natalie Swain deserves so much credit for organizing this and I'm really excited about all the pieces here!
Presentation slide with the section title âMarshalling Maenads ⊠: The Haliae as Foreign Adversariesâ. The background is a screen grab from the movie Barbie, featuring Ryan Gosling as Ken posing for a mug shot.
Someday, someone will tell me to get serious with my slides.
That day was not Saturday.
Many thanks to the Maine Classical Association for inviting me to present on my research at their fall meeting this past weekend!
Iâm feeling a little overwhelmed by the positive response that this paper has received so far. Many thanks to everyone who turned out for the incredible panel this morning!
