and associate professor of molecular pathobiology, co-authored two important studies published this week – one in Gastroenterology and one in Molecular Psychiatry – showing the connection between serotonin in the gut,
(2/3) mood disorders, and digestive issues. The studies show that increasing serotonin in the lining of the gut improves anxiety and depression, and that antidepressants during pregnancy increase the risk for digestive issues in children.
(3/3)Together, the studies reveal a promising avenue for future research: targeting antidepressants selectively to the gut as a new and potentially safer way to treat mood disorders.
