I have a father and mother in law in Iran. I have a sister in law. A niece. She's 14. She likes silly pink headbands and purses and dresses, just like kids her age all over the world. There are 93 million people like her in Iran. People who do all the normal mundane life things as the rest of us.

Effects of appointing president relative to a Trump-appointed judge on January 6 defendant's probability of receiving imprisonment. Biden-appointed judges were significantly less likely to incarcerate than their colleagues.
Effects of appointing president relative to a Trump-appointed judge on January 6 defendant's sentence length. Biden-appointed judges gave significantly shorter prison sentences than their colleagues.
Contrary to our expectations, Trump's appointees were not distinct from the other judges of the D.D.C. However, we find that Biden's appointed judges in the district were consistently more lenient than those of other presidents (Trump, Obama, Bush II, Clinton, & Reagan) across multiple models.
Our forthcoming article in PRQ explores partisan and individual presidential appointment effects on the sentencing of those who attacked the US Capitol on January 6. We find:
There were no partisan differences between Republican and Democratic judges in length or probability of imprisonment. And...
A sacrifice is required.
This last bit is why Claude should ship with another agent, Norbert, whose objective function is maximized when users call Claude a liar.

I would have thought it was this: www.dartstatement.org. Depends on how far back the papers in the graph go, but many PS journals have been requiring (and often even checking) reproducibility packages for a while now.
A gold encrusted 747 just doesn't have the buying power it used to.
You can still see SOS spelled out in lake ice flying into MSP
Well, clearly, it didn't exist before they found out about it.
After Claudia Goldin became the first woman to win a solo Nobel in economics, she got hundreds of invitations.
She accepted three.
One was advising WNBA players on a labor deal. She helped players land the biggest % raise in US sports history.

Very interesting reflections on interpreting trends in V-Dem data for a specific country (Mongolia) from an expert on that country.
💡 How does V-Dem assess the levels of democracy in a country?

Must read.
A military strategy guy writes: “There is a frequent mistake, often from folks who deal in economics, to assume that countries will give up on wars when the economics turn bad.“
I'm currently experiencing a lot of news tv, for reasons, and all these people treating these utterances as meaningful makes it all so much worse.
A few years old, but perhaps relevant: www.ssoar.info/ssoar/bitstr...
People really need to understand how apocalyptic for LNG Israel’s attack on Iranian gas field and Iran’s retaliation against Qatar’s already is – and how much worse it can very easily get.

📣Freedom in the World 2026 is now out! freedomhouse.org/report/freed...
tl;dr:
- Global freedom declined in 2025 & every year since 2005
- 20 yrs of backsliding has transformed the world: more autocrats, fewer democratizing states
- Freedom deteriorated in the US last year & over the last 20
However, with still largely free and fair elections, broad freedoms of expression and association, and a very strong civil society, the country has the potential to continue confronting the ongoing autocratization through voting, protesting, and broader organizing and advocacy.
I expect they did not catch the Inigo Montoya reference I left on their exam.
I'm never forgetting the time, in my second year of teaching, that a student mixed up the words exogenous and erogenous.
A 🧵on how the @vdeminstitute.bsky.social accountability indices help us understand how democratic backsliding is occurring in the United States.
tl;dr: in principle, vertical constraints on the president remain strong; in practice, horizontal and diagonal constraints have been greatly weakened.

I will do anything, use any VPN, crawl through any shady pirate site, to not have to watch Alexi Lalas call the World Cup.
A sketch of a 2 dimensional space. The vertical dimension spans from Spirituality (top) to Materiality (bottom). The horizontal dimension spans from Skepticism (left) to Enthusiasm (right). The four corners are labeled with quotes (that are entirely fictitious): Top left: "We have sinned with neoliberalism and this is our punishment" Top right: "We must prostrate ourselves and let AI into our hearths, for only then we can be saved" Bottom left: "No way I'm picking up this tab, I neither ordered nor ate any of that" Bottom right: "Moar faster commodity articles, science printer go brrrrrr, heck yeah"
Social scientists' AI takes on social media, a first pseudo-weberian sketch with four ideal types.
Did really enjoy watching a guy drive one around the block downtown four times because he couldn't maneuver the thing into any of the (wide open) parking spaces.
