This would depend a lot on the context:
For example, if the game uses combo moves in a duelling situation and the player sees their opponent lining up a coup de grâce manoeuvre. Then forcing the opponent to skip a turn could reset the combo.

Be prepared to also say, this does not mean we are entering combat! Otherwise players may react by immediately attacking the nearest thing 😅
Oh and... if I am really concerned in a specific situation I will have them roll initiative and then ask them in initiative order what they do
Look at another player and ask then what they do?
I'd love the herd mentality to deviate from murder hobo a little more though. There were so many ways to end the climactic scene, and they chose to kill... everything 😅 with a spot of kinky devil play for a twist of course 😈🍆
I think I got as close to an encore as I'll ever get last night.
My #Oneshot that turned into a player agency exercise ended with the players wrecking the place and I was going to let them walk off into the sunset, but they've asked me to run the next #DND session next week.
#TTRPG
I ran a #dnd story focused on player agency last week— giving the party the chance to explore a vibrant town.
Until impulse control gave way.
Then the Cleric cut the rope and rode a bell down into the feast hall.
What’s the most chaotic thing your players have done?

A dark fantasy scene inside a vast ruined cathedral, where a lone hooded figure stands on a broken stone path beneath a blazing shaft of divine light pouring from above. Mist hangs low among rubble, candles flicker in the shadows, and the towering arches disappear into darkness. Large white text reads “EZRIEL’S PRAYER.”
I may have become distracted by AI Music, creating a prayer anthem for A celestial patron, in the form of Ezriel a fallen Angel of hope:

What a fun idea, in Sword World your character can be converted into an NPC with simplfied stats making them a fellow

Hey #TTRPGCommunity why do people want to play evil characters?
Illuminated Cartography You can cast Highlight without expending a spell slot, outlining the affected creatures as if in ink. You can do so a number of times equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest. Highlight Casting Time: Bonus Action, which you take immediately after hitting a target with a spell attack. Range: Self Components: V Duration: Concentration 1 minute One target becomes highlighted In a colour of your choice attack rolls against it have Advantage, and it can’t benefit from the Invisible condition. In addition while you concentrate upon this spell the target is added to the map as a target. At Higher Levels, you can highlight 1 additional target for each level of the spell
To overcome the issue with Faerie Fire on the Artificer Cartographer subclass we are going to trial a #DND #Homebrew I created "Highlight". A bonus action spell using the style of a divine smite from the paladin to remove the save or suck from the equation. Hoping to #Playtest it tonight.
there are so many variables to consider. As a rule though, I think 2 hours is a good centre for online play, it loses the nuance of the social interaction that makes the longer in person sessions work so well. In Person I plan up to 4 hours.
A painterly illustration of a whimsical, steampunk-inspired mechanical creature resembling a chicken. Its body is a rusted metal birdcage-like coop with gears, knobs, and pipes, standing on two jointed, bird-like metal legs. Inside the cage sits a rounded, warm-toned core or occupant. The figure stands alone against a soft, beige background, giving a curious, storybook feel.
Has anybody else tried the #DND2024 Cartographer Subclass?
I've jumped in with both feet at Level 8 and first combat I tried my signature faerie fire out. It was a little underwhelming... ok I mean a lot. The #DM gave me a pity blow with my chicken frier Homunculus to make up for it.

Most definitely a victory feast. Those dragons aren't getting any of it.
a 10ft pole, 50ft of rope and based on the time of night a kebab with burger sauce
Alt text: A diverse group of adults sit closely around a wooden table in a warmly lit room, leaning in with focused expressions as they examine cards, tokens, and small objects laid out like a tabletop game. Sunlight streams through the space, highlighting their hands and faces, creating an atmosphere of collaboration, curiosity, and shared storytelling or strategy.
I got a request from my #FLGS last night to run a #oneshot in a couple of weeks.
Does anybody have a self-contained #DND encounter with pre-gen characters and a killer story for 2024 rules, for 6 unexpected players I can use?
Happy to playtest and provide feedback
An ornate sarcophagus standing upright like a doorway in a sprawling ashen graveyard. The short foot end is depicted as shattered, thrust into the ground. The visible long sides of the intricately carved pale stone coffin, rich with gold veining, subtle cracks, and faint ancient runes, each feature a distinct carved human face. The front long side's face grimaces with closed eyes and mouth. The left side displays a face with wide-open bulging eyes. The right side shows a face with a screaming mouth. The graveyard is bathed in a dim, ambient glow beneath dark, stormy clouds.
The Mercy In the Abyss #Oneshot took 3 hours to build, 3 to run…
and way longer to write up.
Which begs the question:
How much scaffolding do your encounters need?
Do you design everything or just enough to let the table do the rest?

I have a character in 5e DnD tabletop, he was lost in the FeyWild and ended up being themed around bugs, so think glow bugs as dancing lights.
I like to think of most actions he does having an aspect of bug interactions, it's great for conjuring the imagery for him
For me, I think it is 3rd Level, from my previous experience. It has plenty of flavour without being overly complicated.
What’s the best level for a drop-in #DnD one-shot?
I’ve run a few at the #FLGS and want to prep some pregens that won’t take ages to build, overwhelm newer players and won't switch off a seasoned vet.
What level do you aim for when running a casual, all-experience-welcome #oneshot?

Thanks @ka1ikasan.bsky.social for the inspiration to give a game jam a go, I really enjoyed the challenge it presented.
#TTRPGCommunity The #48WordRPGJam is still going until the 1st of Feb if you want to have a go :)
I took part in my first game jam #48WordRPGJam

The result is quiet, contemplative, and endless

My entry to the 48-words RPG jam has just been released! I am so happy to present you "From Bottom To Top", a solo dice game about mountain climbing. ka1ikasan.itch.io/from-bottom-...
from the FAQs you can include images:
"Are graphic elements and symbols allowed?
It is in fact encouraged to use graphic elements to enhance your game!..."
So put the words polyhedral dice in and include a graphic of the specific dice to be used.
Oh! I found your link to the 48 word Game Jam haha, ok "Use Polyhedral Dice" maybe
Do you express which dice to use when they are needed? If so then it won't matter if they have too many dice, just that they have all the right dice to hand and can select the right one at the right time :)
