“We have for a long time lived in a kind of ‘Gore-Tex republic’ … we wanted it nice and cosy inside and all the unpleasant things had to be outside.” - rarely read a more accurate description.
New report published today says the unregulated use of Generative AI in the UK economy will not necessarily lead to economic growth & risks damaging the UK's creative sector.

AI’s capabilities are often overstated, especially when it comes to ‘political readiness.’ My colleague @alturobov.bsky.social warns that policymakers, rushing to modernise governance, might mistake AI’s technical achievements for political competence.

thanks to everyone involved: @bennettinstitute.bsky.social @productivity.bsky.social @bartvanark.bsky.social
Three key insights really stood out:
1. Proactive cost control requires real-time insights and data.
2. We need shared accountability for tech and its costs, from engineers to product managers.
3. A ‘north star’ for leadership is vital to guide discussions and manage conflicts at the board level.
We brought together over 20 senior leaders—CIOs, CTOs, global tech experts, and government representatives—to tackle the productivity paradox head-on and, more importantly, explore what companies and their boards must do to overcome it.
I was thrilled to host a fantastic event at The Shard in London today as part of #NationalProductivityWeek!

All I can say to this is that people always believe that it can’t happen to their country, until it does. I saw it happen in Venezuela, which until the 2000s was Latin America’s oldest democracy, with a solid constitution, a clear division of powers, an independent judiciary, and a lively press.
🎙️How are data & algorithms impacting our lives?
@ginasue.bsky.social, @jenitennison.com & @jfbonnefon.bsky.social discuss how data & algorithms impact our work, public services & decision-making, while raising questions about ethics, fairness, & governance.

Not the most uplifting read to start the day.
It’s disheartening to see that, for some, freedom is equated with the right to offend others. What they dismiss as "self-censorship" is, in reality, the respectful behaviour that underpins a functional and cohesive society.

„The government must go further and invite the public to be active participants in the productivity agenda. It should promote a culture of improvement in the private and public sectors, and it should encourage people to develop and share their own ideas for better productivity in their workplaces.“
