Monterey Park becomes the first city in California to ban "all data centers within city limits" Residents of the small enclave east of LA not only killed their city's proposed 250,000 square foot data center, they pushed city council to ban them altogether

Last night, after an hours-long public hearing, Monterey Park became the first city in California to pass an ordinance permanently banning data centers.

The city council voted unanimously to declare data centers a public nuisance, and to "prohibit all data centers within city limits."

and never trust people who cannot see the person and cling to ridiculous metrics of exclusion. The academia is toxic af and it's important to remember that a lot of these people only have the job to cling to. And, the only way they feel good is to make you feel bad.

many academics think my record is not impressive because they judge from time of completion (ignoring the nearly decade long period when I was working). Well, I just wrote up a theory section like it was a recap of a BTS concert. So, I guess my point is never listen to haters 2/

I took a long break between finishing my PhD and becoming an academic. I realized when I finished my degree, I didn't really know what EJ and policy was so I worked for many years. I remember a faculty member telling me that they didn't think I could get up to date on the literature and 1/

PHOTO ESSAY: In a corner of Appalachia, soaring utility costs are surpassing rents and mortgages WEST COLUMBIA, W.Va. (AP) — Eric Pinson is obsessed with stacks of electric bills laid out in neat piles on his desk.

When utilities raise rates, profits go up. When profits go up, CEOs get bonuses. Meanwhile, families in places like West Virginia are taking out loans to pay $900 energy bills.

This cycle doesn’t end until we demand real accountability.

Sad to see this ingratitude towards the Democrats for enabling the killings of tens of thousands of civilians in Gaza. Please give credit where it's due.

They are still relitigating the last election instead of currently laying the groundwork for winning the next one.

And all of the candidates who need non-white supremacist, non-ableist, non-transphobic votes are very busy bashing the marginalized & disenfranchised.

That’s how you lose again.

Trump administration begins refunding more than $166bn in tariffs Claims system launches months after supreme court ruled Trump had no legal authority to impose tariffs

So you and I and everyone else are in effect now refunding American corporations for import tariffs, although we paid for most of them in the form of higher prices — which they won’t now lower because they have monopoly power to keep prices high.

I could list at least 10 horrific crises going on right now because of the Trump regime and Democrats are responding by…. chastising their own party. Great job, Andy!

Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly ‘quadruple tap’ Lebanese health ministry says killing of 91 healthcare workers shows ‘total disregard’ for international law

The Israeli army struck civilians in the Lebanese city of Mayfadoun.

And then, the Israelis double-tapped the medics who arrived onto the scene.

And then, they triple-tapped the next wave of medics.

And then, they did it one more time for good measure.

The economic argument is, of course, not the moral argument but it’s enraging that continuously, the same people who are frothing at calling ICE then realize how they are screwing themselves and only then start to think about what they’ve wrought.

How Silicon Valley Humiliated the Democrats When will they learn? The party remains far too solicitous of an industry that’s rewarded their fealty with four years of Trump and untold damage to democracy.

"Democrats need to break from this path and acknowledge that billionaires—especially those in the increasingly antidemocratic tech sector—are never going to side with them over the GOP." From @alexisgoldstein.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/2087...

This is more broadly generalizable: If you don't do the research yourself, you have no idea if AI is making stuff up. And if you do the research yourself, then AI isn't saving you much labor, if any.

Energy and climate media outlets that make money by advertising products have financial incentives to bias coverage toward solutions that involve buying lots of products. This is one reason why good solutions that don't involve buying much, such as "shift VMT to public transit," get little coverage.

The Warehouse, in Plain Sight That concrete box off the freeway wasn’t designed for storage so much as capture. It’s a disappearing machine. We need to see it clearly.

Why is ICE buying so many warehouses, and what does this have to do with the warehouse's shifting place in the US economy? In Places Journal, I chronicle the long arc of Warehousing's carceral geography and the speculative building boom that ICE is absorbing. placesjournal.org/article/the-...
