The grief hits even harder because he truly was my mom’s dog until she passed away… so that opens up wounds I’ve been dealing with for 6 years…

She has ticks where she has to yell every time she moves. She has panic attacks when she tries to lift one of her legs.
She can’t do anything for herself anymore. We have to help her bathe and go to the bathroom.

I've also said in a previous reply that I've put a lot of emphasis in "forepaw" instead of "hand", temperature/texture against pawpads, ear movements, sniffing, wagging, etc.

Not only have I described the characters, but so far I've put a lot of emphasis into "forepaw" (instead of "hand"), temperature/texture against their pawpads, ear movements, sniffing, wagging, etc. So the reader would definitely be reminded, hopefully, that they are still wolves.
For my story in particular, they are sentient quadrupedal wolves. Still walk on all fours, but have the intelligence equal to medieval humans.
