If you live in Virginia, tomorrow you have a huge opportunity to make it clear to the GOP that if they want to win, it won’t be by changing the rules and redrawing maps. At least, not without a fight. Vote YES on the redistricting vote, and push back!

Notice how the popular media narrative has moved on, while people on the ground in Minneapolis are still struggling and crying out that things are as bad as ever. This is how fascist regimes operate — overreach, recalibration, normalization. Get louder, not quieter.

ICE is still doing checkpoints in Minneapolis like we are an occupied territory. Life remains really hard here thanks to Trump's thugs.

Opinion | Jamal Khashoggi: What the Arab world needs most is free expression The Arab world needs a modern version of the old transnational media so citizens can be informed about global events.

I will never forget having to edit Jamal’s final, posthumous piece for the Washington Post, after he was murdered.

He was calling for free expression in the Arab world. You can read it here :

But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed.

After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.

Memphis crime stats should be easy to get because we have historically been one of the few midsize cities reporting it properly to the FBI. We have always been a popular straw man for crime arguments because we actually collect the stats to begin with.

Q&A with the Filmmakers | Jazz | A Film by Ken Burns | PBS Read a Q&A with the filmmakers.

Ken Burns on Jazz:

“But what it says is that the genius of America has been to trust the individual. It's just the utter symbol of freedom in it. And this is not freedom without responsibility. This is freedom coordinated with other people.

Just watched The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), a harrowing look into the darkness @ the heart of American lynch-mob injustice. 82 yrs later we saw this almost play out on our phones by a buncha remorseless podcasters & crooked politicos who instead of reflecting on their hate are movin on to new targets.

I believe this 1000%

Showing students how we got here.

Teaching them how to evaluate evidence for themselves.

Enabling them to evaluate the present for themselves.

SO important right now.

Understanding the past is our future.

Remembering MN house speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their beloved dog Gilbert. Murdered in June at their home by a rightwing Trump-voting evangelist, who also shot another MN lawmaker and his wife at THEIR home, 9 and 8 times, respectively (miraculously, they survived).

Observed today at the DPS headquarters in Austin: a few hundred blue shirted individuals in riot gear going through close order drills. Chilling as we keep seeing signs of a deliberate turn toward a police state by the current state and federal administrations.

Casar: "Donald Trump is the most corrupt president in American history. Ken Paxton is the most corrupt politician in Texas history. And the two of them are working together on the most corrupt scheme I've ever seen. What they're trying to do is insulate Trump from any accountability for his crimes."
