I've worked with co-writers a few times on music projects and the personal dynamic is by far the most important thing. The most successful of those endeavors were with a good friend. Mutual trust, respect (admiration, even?) and absolutely no egos.

That's an interesting observation about drafting a poem. Writing music at a DAW, an instrument, or straight to manuscript paper are all very different experiences for me, likely for the same reason.
