There was a lot of other stuff, too. I learned from him how to be a good husband and father -- by doing everything exactly the opposite of the way he did it. I have a lot of material for my autobiography, if I ever write it.

Back when he bought those books, he didn't know the term science fiction. He bought books that were generally respected and then he read few of them. Later, when I started buying sf, he expressed his contempt for what I was reading. He expressed the same contempt for what I wrote.

My first novel (sf) was published in 1977. I wasn't introduced to the field, really. My father, who would later say that sf was rubbish, had H. G. Wells novels in the house because he grew up in England in the early 20th century and considered Wells important fiction. Wells was my first exposure.
