Another side of this that I’ve experienced…when grieving the loss of family and friends (I’ve had more than my fair share of losses) sometimes when I could get away to concerts and social events, looking for a break, all of my concerned friends want to know how I’m doing. Houston IS a hellhole, in so many ways. But there’s also so much cool shit happening too. Growing up in the burbs was a drag, but Montrose was our place to go and be with other weirdos and freaks. And the crossover between all the scenes made for a great community vibe wherever you went.

Thanks for sharing this! Totally took me back to my time in Montrose, late 80’s-01. I worked at restaurants, bars, coffees shops, and record stores all over the neighborhood. Hung out at the Menil regularly, and was in a production of A Midsummer Nights’s Dream at The Orange Show in 1990. Flashback!
