Iris Long, Scientific Mentor to AIDS Activists, Dies at 92

It’s hard to express how important Iris was to ACT UP’s scientific development. She was the catalyst who started it all. Iris Long, Scientific Mentor to AIDS Activists, Dies at 92 www.nytimes.com/2026/04/17/h...

Two pulis stand side by side on a red patio with flaking paint. The smaller, on the left, is looking toward the larger, who is staring straight ahead. The little one has a grey beard and a somewhat dominant posture. The larger has a blue bow tie that is askew under his cords. Both are black and fully corded. Both have tags hanging from their necks.

Celosa and Fusilli, both black fully corded pulis, pose in a lavish loft style penthouse apartment with floor to ceiling windows behind them. She is a smaller dog with black cords, and is standing on a Persian carpet. He is sitting more seriously on a red wooden divan with a white cushion behind her and to the right. The photo looks like an ill advised attempt to project that everything is fine in some magazine profile. It appears that perhaps both are not on the same page.

A closeup of Celosa the puli. She is fully corded and primarily black, with a white beard. She stands on a wooden floor with a piece of white furniture obscured behind her. She is wearing id tags, and she is smiling. Her shiny nose peeks out from her fringe of cords and her pink tongue is behind row of bottom teeth. She is looking lovely.

Fusilli the puli lays on an unmade bed with white and grey bedding in geometric patterns. He has one paw thrown over his eyes in a dramatic fashion, and it is somewhat difficult given his cords of fur to determine where exactly his limbs begin and his torso ends. His blue bow tie peeks out under a row or white teeth. He looks both relaxed and like he's over-doing it at the same time.

BTW, new people, these fools are Fusilli (I know, I know, best puli name ever) and Celosa. They sometimes stop by, mainly to ask for food, but sometimes to accept adoration.

Did you know it's a norm here to use alt text? It helps people who can't see the photos very well, sometimes with humor.

For Women Leaving Prison, Education Can Be a Way Out the college-in-prison program offered by Tulane University and Operation Restoration provides education to women impacted by the criminal justice system.

In these dark times, I got to write a positive story for @msmagazine.com about how women impacted by incarceration are building new futures: msmagazine.com/2026/04/21/w...

Slept badly, didn’t feel like going out to run, but the calendar said I had to, so I set the treadmill to a modest pace and just banged out two miles.

I’m no one and nothing next to the people heading out tomorrow, but I couldn’t do one mile straight through two years ago, and I’m so grateful.

Also they have to put ACTUAL library patrons on these boards of trustees. You should have checked out at least ONE book from your local NYC branch every 6 months to serve on these boards. Some of the names are ceremonial. I don't believe most of them actually use their local libraries.

Absolutely incredible.

NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman, who commanded Artemis II, took this footage from the far side of the Moon with his iPhone.

Watch with sound on.

historical romance novels set in the regency era/napoleonic wars and aftermath are my sleep aid of choice but also so interesting to me as a feminist economist. Snyder is not for reading before sleep!

A hiking path up a mountain

A hiking path up a mountain

I have been wanting to hike for YEARS but unable because of my spine injury.

It’s taken one year and four months of determination and working hard on my mobility, but today I DID IT.

I could cry. You people have no idea. I never, ever thought I’d be able to do anything like that ever again. ❤️

If any journalists are writing about Maryland becoming the first US state to have an official state shark, I, a Maryland-based shark scientist, am available for comment.

Trump Administration Orders Dismantling of the US Forest Service - WhoWhatWhy The headquarters is going to Utah. Every regional office is being shuttered. The research program is being destroyed.

“…the Trump administration announced the most devastating attack on the US Forest Service in the agency’s 121-year history. Not a budget cut. Not a policy shift. Not a “reorganization.” An execution.”

Hey @bellarmineu.bsky.social please stop advertising your #GusCoin Fund appeals only on FB. You are missing a world of interaction. As dreaded as Music 101 was at times, those cassettes of music excerpts have been the keys to so much music enjoyment for my entire adult life.

I didn’t know that! My related sea duty lessons were that sometime food poisoning is appendicitis. And sometimes it’s an atypical shellfish allergy.
