Forbes Prediction Market Gamifies Story About Mass Shooting of 8 Children Forbes launched ForbesPredict in January as part of an effort to reverse declining traffic from search engines and keep users on its website longer.

"In another sign that the depravity economy has no bottom, Forbes published a story about a Louisiana man that killed 8 children over the weekend containing a box that asked readers to predict whether Congress would do anything about gun control.'"

« There are systemic and structural reasons for why Nunavik, as part of Quebec, is veering farther from the goal of eliminating tuberculosis by 2030, while its neighbouring Inuit-governed territory of Nunavut is getting closer »

If he meant any of this he'd just retire from commentary because that's the only rational response to getting it this wrong, but instead he's just gonna endorse Vance next year because of under-the-hood articles about how he opposed the war

“Whenever a study participant opened their mouth to speak, Paul, Victor, and Tiago came face-to-face with the fundamentally fragile conditions of their data, which could be delegitimized by anything from a single written letter to the demands of normative masculinity.”

The cyberattack on The British Library in October 2023 knocked out ebooks and almost ever other computer thing there for years.

Ebooks just came back. They were knocked out everywhere using the BL’s license (legal deposit libraries I think? More libraries?)

Distributed physical copies matter.

Karp’s book came out after @bentarnoff.com and I had already started writing ours. Reading it we were like “oh this is Muskism.” The interesting thing, as @lioneltrolling.bsky.social pointed out, is that it was written with the assumption of an incoming Harris administration.

Expanding on this:
Teach quotation, summary, paraphrase, citation at the beginning of every class, first activity after syllabus overview. Logic of citation, being able to retrace scholarly steps, replicate their work.

Reminding myself: teach summary, paraphrase, and quotation conventions every time. Intro. Grad class. Every single time.

OK, so this isn't a conspiracy but contrails actually do contribute to global warming and by avoiding them airlines could significantly reduce their carbon footprint contrails.org

The Shreveport Mass Killing Isn’t Just About ‘Mental Health’ When a man shoots his wife and children, the term you are looking for is patriarchy.

"Shreveport was the place of my late mother’s happily ever after, the place where she began a 27-year love story with her husband after surviving 3 violent romantic relationships. After each relationship, the men became violent; one shot her. The other two beat her."

The End of an Experimental College Hampshire College and the Limits of Reinvention in American Higher Education

"When Hampshire replaced grades w/narrative evals. & standard majors w/individualized programs, it was not just making a choice about how to organize education. It was opting out of the signal system on which the economic value of a college degree depends."

Literally a scene where the “Sudanese” valet is accused because some lady saw a “negro” leaving the scene… man is like, “do I look like a Nubian to you?! I’m from Cairo!“ 👀

“I might be a Mohammedan but I’m no fanatic!” 👀 x2

Too bad I can’t show this in class

Not sure how I got the episode of Murdoch Mysteries about Churchill and the Battle of Omdurman, which features serious subplot about “race” and religion in the Upper Nile, the day that I’ve been prepping my lecture on Africanity and regional theorizing about Afro-Arab solidarities and exclusions

I always buy brassica 😂

But one thing I like to do is to do a quick chop with some onions, season with salt, pepper, chili crisp, the roast in the oven — often with sweet potatoes (same seasoning) on another rack. Will serve with roasted salmon or crispy tofu to round out the meal.

Truly. I bought a couple of heads at 0.39/lb (and 0.69/lb the week before). even the bags of slaw, which i sometimes cook with, were on sale, with coupons, for 0.39/bag.

Students are speeding through their online degrees in weeks, alarming educators Some online colleges allow students to take unlimited courses on their own time, leading to quick degrees and worries about devaluing credentials.

“The phenomenon — sometimes referred to as degree hacking, college speed runs or hyper-accelerated degrees — has spawned a cottage industry of influencers making videos about how quickly they earned their degrees and encouraging others to follow suit.”

Speedrunning college. What could go wrong.
