DRM is "digital rights management", aka copy protection.
My Kindle/Kobo/Nook books are all run through a DRM stripping program and saved on my hard drive (and backed up on my media server). There *are* ways to own digital media, but it takes effort.
Library worker, here. Get in touch with your local libraries and give them your contact info. We regularly get books our policies often don't allow us to keep (encyclopedias are often in this list, as well as books that are very well loved), so we try our best to find homes for them.
