To me, ao3 still is like a weekly jam session. There's great talent that just enjoys noodling around in fanfic, there's stuff too weird or spicy for BNP, and people learning by doing.

And that's art.

It's honestly the best way to feel the story and immerse yourself in the writing. Enjoy!
