RAF Upper Heyford (Hansard, 23 January 1997) RAF Upper Heyford (Hansard, 23 January 1997)

While we await the landowner’s answer as to what was done on decommissioning USAF Upper Heyford, this Lords Hansard on a debate triggered by the late and much missed Stina Robson is of interest.

A lengthy Health Scrutiny Committee meeting.

Mike drop moment: public health reporting on health visitor work, highlighting a cluster of recent A&E admissions caused by infants swallowing batteries. This apparently comes from toys that fail to meet EU standards becoming more widely available…

Thanks John!

It’s been a pleasure speaking to you and others. A couple of good new ideas and a number of extra issues on their way to being sorted. As the democratic process should be, with the excellent @banburylibdems.bsky.social Jim Hartley.

Sadly this doesn’t surprise me. However there are efforts being made to ensure testing happens.

‘Hungary, Europe!’ Spontaneous chant I just heard on streets of Budapest … Supermajority means Tisza really can dismantle the Orban system… and Orban has conceded… It will be a tough road ahead but truly hard to imagine a better result… I’ll be writing about it soon…

Three Oxfordshire districts are among the top 30 councils in the country for household recycling: South Oxfordshire (61.3%), Vale of White Horse (58.9%), West Oxfordshire (57%), and Cherwell (51%). Oxfordshire overall recycles 56.6% - the highest of any county council.

And here’s the choice for residents in Upper Heyford and Heyford Park. Labour can’t win here: they’ve not even stood here!

Statement of Persons Nominated (lists of Candidates) | Elections 2026 | Cherwell District Council Information regarding Elections in 2026

The list of candidates for Cherwell council has been published.

The big news: Labour are short of 5 candidates - almost a third - in Sean Woodcock’s council.

(Two seats have a double election due to resignations)

I watched Noa-Lynn on her Ally Pally debut. There was no discernible transphobic nonsense from the crowd. Her A game is very good, and she was close to winning.

This is a petty and vindictive piece of culture war posturing by someone who thinks it’ll make them look good, somewhere.

One of our campaign teams are convening in one in a bit.

A variation on Oxford where they’ve been simultaneously for and against the temporary congestion charge.

It doesn’t need to be outrageously expensive either, if well done.

For projects such as trams, we’ve short-changed ourselves again, mainly through the way we do utilities far too close to the surface. The lack of record-keeping and unnecessary costs payable as part of the Faustian pacts with private finance are where the sting is. Been there, done that.

This is mainly true of the small stuff. Laura is right on the absurd costs of legal orders for tiny variations to speed limits.

The Transport & Works Act Order for East West Rail didn’t take that long. The absurd timescales seeing still no public trains on that line are more classic DaFT.

This is indeed a good thread. Not entirely right though. The cost of consultation is too high, and could easily be rationalised were common sense to be identified in the Department for Transport aka DaFT.

But……
