A yellow-crowned night heron walking gracefully on a faded red handrail at the Murfree Springs wetlands in Murfreesboro, Tn. Yellow talons grip the rail and it's walking to the right of the frame.

The heron's right foot has slipped from the handrail, and it has its wings extended to help regain balance. The yellow plume has risen behind the heron's head, and the bird's beak is slightly open, as if muttering, "What just happened?"

In this third photo, the yellow-crowned night heron's legs are extended down on either side of the handrail, with wings extended and yellow plume rising up from its head. The bird is facing the camera, with torso on the handrail and legs straddling the railing on either side. It's hard to know if birds get embarrassed, but this one's expression seems to be the very definition of "Geez... what else can go wrong?"

Herons are usually so elegant and graceful. Usually. This yellow-crowned night heron was trying to walk toward me on a handrail when something embarrassing happened.

I think writing your stories with AI so you can "focus on reporting" is both disrespectful to your audience and a guarantee that you don't do good reporting, because you're clearly not a fan of quality information. Negative levels of respect for people that do this.

I recommend this book on painting landscapes from life! It's a thing I wanted to do for a long time (watching James Gurney videos helped inspire me!) but I wasn't successful at until reading this book. I now do it regularly and am usually happy with the results!

A6-sized gouache painting of a tree's shadows on cement and some surrounding grasses. You can see a bit of the tree but it's mostly out of frame; the shadows and backlit grasses are definitely the focal point.

Went out to paint some flowers but there weren't any in a comfortable, shaded spot, so I painted some shadows instead. I love painting.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

I'm speaking purely selfishly here, but I hope you don't give in for a while because these drawings are so charming and cute and a real highlight of my day
