Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage. A woman answers the door. We have come for the child, says the hooded figure So soon? she asks It is time, says the hooded figure. The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card! What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading! For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman, the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them. Do not cry mother. I am a writer now.

If you're worried about the CA Governor's race please share--and USE!--this new website by the volunteers at Indivisible Alameda. It tells you how to contact the lower polling candidates in the race and urge them to drop out. It's a much-needed resource.

Hookland has a long tradition of winged-dogs known as Feorhunds. Even the stone representations of them have a reputation for unbidden climbing and flying. Some say the nets hung around St. Agatha at Belford Darrow are to counter their proclivities for zooming around its tower.
A new report from the University of California shows that the state's decision to raise the minimum wage for fast food workers to $20/hr didn’t hurt jobs, or raise prices much.
Data from over 2,000 restaurants shows that the $20/hr minimum wage didn’t reduce employment.

Notice how the most celebrated and successful space mission in *decades* was run by at least 50% “DEI hires”—not all white men? And not even all Americans. Maybe diversity *is* strength . . .
Love this video from @hankgreen.bsky.social - beautiful photos made all the more beautiful when you understand what's going on

I'm deep down the rabbit hole on FROGFISH, 60 species of anglerfish in family Antennariidae.
They are deeply, utterly WEIRD & MARVELOUS.
Most walk on modified fins.
Others use jet propulsion.
Some are capable of air-breathing.
Some are "hairy", others blend perfectly in sargassum.
Meeeeee but do people really WANT to read about a spy, secretary, archivist, scientist, vampire, and thief trying to prevent the end of their world

I wanted to just sink into my media downloads for a while and pretend I didn’t exist.
When Houston got rid of its rainbow crosswalk in Montrose, ordinary people stepped in to paint rainbows all over the neighborhood. It's happening all over Texas, wrote about it here:

Cloud of periwinkle forget me nots.

A rosy pink flower with yellow gold stamens.
Very bright California poppies.
Just some take a breath emergency flowers.

Donald Trump threatening the destruction of an entire civilization is madness.
He is completely unfit to serve as President of the United States.
Invoke the 25th Amendment. Or Republicans must stand up with us to impeach him. We cannot allow him to set fire to the world.

I've been teaching Susanna Clarke's PIRANESI this week and my God, what a lovely, lovely book. As the world gets progressively madder and more anxious, it's been a pleasure to return to its peaceful halls. If you haven't read this splendid fantasy novel yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up.
As I keep saying: Because no matter what abusers take from their victims, they don't want to take the blame. And one of the prerogatives of power is to be in charge of blame, and abusers routinely exercise that power to make their own acts someone else's fault.
And yet in their fear of rocking the boat, they've become powerless; the legislative branch of government has, under the leadership of Thune and Johnson, surrendered the power of the purse, the power to declare war, and most of its other powers, except when the Democratic minority prevails.
Our hodology is haunted. Ghosts crowd the ways. Whether we think of them as temporal shades or spirits of the dead, our navigations have crosshatched the land with stories that continue walking long after death. – #CJosiffe #Ghosts

Y'all there is a woman and a black man circling the moon and NASA's mission control+ science teams are so diverse and people are nerding out about science and exploration this is all a gigantic middle finger to the stupid and hate and grotesque ghouls running our country
Reid Wiseman on #Artemis II: "We have Earth out window 4 and Moon out window 3... the Moon is about 3-4 times the size of the Earth and it is almost full, and the Earth is just a small crescent out there... it's magnificent... such a majestic view out here"
Mission Control: "Amaze, amaze, amaze!"
Uncertainty, a scent of soil and jasmine These mornings crouch in the half-clutch of dream Strange flowers grow from this turned ground Nurtured with anxiety grounds, the thin shells of Many moments, and hope like citrus rind and bone Watered, yes, in sadness As the grieving heart Lifts to rain --then sun, and the pour of warmth That light within © Jessica Reisman April 2020
A small poem from 2020.
It's International Asexuality Day and a good day to back this in its final hours ✨💜
Thank you!
Home is a seed Carried inside The tree a dream embodied Blooming wide and deep even While the seed remains A seed unfathomably dense Heavy with potential Shelter support comfort Hope in root sap leaf A cup of tea and a creature companion Kindness in the spreading lineaments of Branch and twig A seed dreaming Struck through with the light Of home © J.Reisman April 2026
Poem.
Title: Easter Egg Hunt techniques inspired by great detectives Panel 1: Sherlock Holmes. Deduce the exact location of every egg from seemingly unrelated details without leaving your room. Send your amazed sidekick to fetch them. Panel 2: Jack Reacher Hit the garden hard and fast. Take no prisoners Get back on the road. This approach results in a thrillingly intense hunt, but very few intact eggs. Panel 3: George Smiley Meticulously assess documents, people and motives. Then scrupulously collect the eggs and dejectedly wonder if any of it was worthwhile.
