I recently learned a new word--otrovert--that describes me. That probably comes out in my newest PSL post. I want to discourage people from identifying with the groups they belong to. We should all be individuals first, group members second.

Today at PSL, I continue a theme: anti-intellectualism goes with violence.

In my latest at PSL, I again defend the humanities in higher education.

If I weren’t me, I’d take Kagan’s word over my own, but I think (and hope) he’s wrong about part of this: I do think it’s possible, and even likely, that we get a somewhat peaceful world with a multi-polar world.

Today at PSL, I discuss an idea of David Friedman's and its use today to promote civil discourse.

If you are trying to understand the current state of the 2 annoyingly large parties, this seems right on.

I've never been convinced we should have given up ad coelum rights. Now I wonder about sacrificing a different part of the bundle of rights with regard to AI. New at PSL.

One week until Thanksgiving. A repeat (my first) at PSL on how to deal with talking with family members you think are radically wrong.

My latest. We should be discussing creative destruction. It explains both polarization and the rise of socialist tendencies.

Of course, you don't need another response to Charlie Kirk's assassination. This is a bit more than that. A tie in to my work on civil discourse. My newest at PSL:

Axios: Commerce Secr H. Lutnick says the gov wants a cut of revenue generated by patents universities developed w/fed funds. I’ve said this for years. Do it & stop the idiotic attacks on academia—including disruptions in promised funds (then scale back in orderly fashion w/out violating promises).
A new piece at PSL expressing my current concerns despite my general recent optimism and suggesting what is needed.

Trying a different style of writing. Here's a story with a point about what government can do.

The bill Trump signed last week is extremely worrisome for alot of reasons, but I think I am most worried about the tremendous funding increase for ICE. So I wrote this:

It's been a while since I've posted. I'll likely do better going forward, but today's post is simple: we should be talking alot more about the nationalization of the steel industry, especially in a time of war.

“we must own our mistakes. If we are to refortify the liberal foundations of American higher education, we must proactively name the failures that have contributed to a permission structure that now accommodates illiberal and authoritarian reactionary forces.”

Social media speeds discourse. Academic publishing has sped along with it. In some cases, they’ve fused. (Eg, many academics advertise their pubs on social media.) The quality of both have changed. Does that explain the rise of academic activism?

New on PSL. Taking "political identity" too seriously is a mistake.

Lauren is right: some fears are reasonable, but we have to be careful with that fear anyway.
