I picked up a couple of t&l books second hand, because they were so much cheaper than getting them new.

As an added bonus, they are full of scribbled annotations from their previous owners, which I absolutely love!

Always interesting to see what points resonated with a different reader...

Yeah, and we need to have a serious talk about the lack of specificity in the word average.

3 days ago 0 0 1 0

Yeah, I read that.

I figure the queue isn't going to grow linearly, far more people will arrive near to 8:30.

I'd target half the queue length, so aim to join at 7.

This is why I think some kind of baseline test at the start is so important.

Those lazy so-and-so's might turn out to be brilliant if you give them a bit of a kick at the start, but if that doesn't work they need to rethink what they are doing with the next two years early on so it isn't wasted!

And I'm 100% with you on picking a sensible starting topic.

I don't want to scare them away at the start of the year, I want to ease them into an a level way of working.

We kick off with manipulating surds as a nice smooth extension of GCSE work that doesn't get too crazy!

A poor performance in the baseline triggers a little extra help early on, and a second shot at it a few weeks later, to check the students who found it hard are able to up their game appropriately.

I think that's a good call on a tough a level course, and isn't meant to be punitive.

I agree with almost all of what you've said.

We do a baseline early doors in year 12 though, and I think it's a good idea.

It just tests some core GCSE algebra, mostly solving linear simultaneous, dealing with quadratics, and a bit of indices.

The point isn't to punish, but to check the basics.

And nearly two thirds of those grade 5 students passed the A-level.

Bonkers to have the cut of point be a grade 7, instead accept more broadly and then do some sensible baseline testing of key concepts so you can identify students who need to shift courses based on actual subject knowledge.

A subway style map on a parchment background. The map's title reads: "Narnia Transit Map: Talking Beasts Ride Free." The map has seven keys, one for each of the seven books in C.S. Lewis's Narinia series. The main movements of characters and action in each book are traced by colored lines, like a subway map. Locations in each book are marked out as stops in the lines. There is a drawing of a lion above the title of the map, and in the lower right corner there is a compass rose.

My LoTR subway maps have been quite popular, but they're not the only ones I've drawn! I really like my Narnia one, too.

With separate lines for the plot arcs of each of the books, it gives you a fun way to see Lewis's world.

Just watched the mario galaxy movie.

There were so many references to old things! I loved it!

Picked this up on a whim in Tesco today.

The boys absolutely loved chucking them around the garden, and we didn't even get around to the actual game (which is printed on comically large waterproof cards)

It's very frustrating when you arrive somewhere and can't access it for any reason, especially somewhere that you could reasonably expect to be fine.

It's unusual to not let dogs into the grounds at all at a national trust place, so I completely understand!

The app is pretty good with information about access for dogs.

It does say they can't go past the entrance gates...

I'd also ask my favourite question:
What is the biggest weakness/problem you are facing at the moment?

You can attempt to check their honesty on interview, especially if you can ask the same thing of a middle leader / classroom teacher.

I'd also want to talk about the culture of the school, what is their approach to staff development, what behaviour systems are in place, how does quality assurance work?

Making contact before you apply is mostly about feeling out whether or not it's worth applying in the first place.

I'd ask side questions about the exact nature of the role, job descriptions are usually generic, but the actual job will probably have a targeted address of focus.

Good to know, my boys have been asking to watch it this week!

As well as super mario galaxy, and the magic faraway tree.

Lots of cinema trips this week!
