I'm reminded of all the people I've met who are hourly employees and work additional hours (without including them on their timesheets) because of their commitment to their unit and the institution's mission.

It'd be great to read a thoughtful assessment of bureaucracies and employment practices in academia that was informed by an understanding of labor studies (and industrial relations).
The part that resonates with me the most is the notion that selectivity, equity, inclusiveness and excellence are not in tension with each other. I work at a place committed to excellence (and they are!), but many others share that commitment.
One thing I neglected to mention - this is a great piece from VP Solomou, one of the few considered reactions to the recent discussion on the topic.
An extremely important point - we need to focus less on the Ivies and more on the schools that actually educate most young people (and many of those schools and young people are excellent!).
Proceeds from this sale will contribute to the cost of a computer for a kid entering middle school!
A reminder to anyone interested in cool collectibles - I'm selling three mint in box action figures (including the amazing HasLab Galactus) on EBay - come check it out!

A terrifying story.
Devastated to hear the entire Marvel Studios’s Visual Development team has been let go. This was my old home but more importantly, the home of so many incredible artists and peers.
Absolutely heartbreaking 😔
Sending all my impacted peers my love and support. Please reach out if you need anything!
Ah, DK is offline for a big site makeover today, so the Tinyview version is currently the only option!

Trump has cut legal immigration more than illegal immigration, as I predicted. While illegal entries have fallen, they continued a prior trend, falling more before he came back. Meanwhile, Trump has drastically cut legal entries, reversing the prior upward trend. www.cato.org/blog/trump-h...
This reminds me of a terrific fireside chat with Dr Marcella Nunez Smith at Yale’s school of management a few weeks ago. One thing that really stuck with me was the emphasis on community partnerships + recognition of the brilliance that exists outside the walls of the academy.
May his victims find peace and healing through their lives ❤️🩹❤️🔥
Looking forward to reading/digesting this. Very troubling findings (especially as a parent).
This doesn't feel like a victory...
Also I swear to God if he doesn't use nukes but carpet bombs the civilian infrastructure of the entire country you don't get to fucking say he showed restraint or its normal or what the fuck ever, war crimes are about the crimes not the means.
I guess? I don't know...
This is such a crucial point. There is a path, but one has to actually be committed to taking it.
I'd suggest that all workers have value and that we are stronger when we act in solidarity. yaledailynews.com/articles/ins...
The Supreme Court did not strike down conversion therapy bans today.
Not nationwide. Not in Colorado. Not anywhere.
Here's what actually happened in Chiles v. Salazar—and why the coverage you're seeing serves the conservative legal movement more than it serves you.
Excellent Bouie piece on the birthright case. Especially how it points out that every academic backing Trump has either explicitly rejected Trump’s take in the past or somehow written extensively on the 14A without raising it (and implicitly rejecting it)… and have no new evidence now.

by far the worst tendency on this platform is its tendency to interpret a description of something that happened or is happening as an endorsement of that thing
I have been reading Mark on conversion therapy cases for years and he has always been very clear about how awful it is
I don't know what SCOTUS will do on birthright citizenship case, it's anybody's guess. But if they endorse Trump's diktat, the only response is defiance. Outright, open defiance by the states. A decision not just erroneous but illegitimate, beyond their power, null and void from the day it's issued.
I take some small comfort in knowing that this decrepit apparatchik is a year younger than me.
If a secdef violating the 14th amendment rights of US servicemembers by denying promotions based on race isn’t impeachable then I don’t see what is. The man would rather the military be racist than effective.
This is a very well reported article about the end of meritocracy in the US armed services (the most deadly and well-armed in the world). If only the people who write the headlines read the article.
The NY Times headline writers are highly skilled in the art of understatement. www.nytimes.com/2026/03/27/u...
Funny thing about American mass media is how woke content is broadly popular, routinely pays for itself, and sometimes goes blockbuster, whereas right-wing content is a narrow niche that rarely reaches breakeven, never goes blockbuster, and usually requires immense subsidies for it to exist at all.
The last part is hilarious! On a separate note, I think we should have some reservations about leasing our libraries (re book collection) from Amazon.
Minor quibble - children are often lovely (and far more considerate of others than one might imagine).
