Stand with Meenu Batra: A Call to Action for Language Professionals - American Translators Association (ATA) Leading language organizations respond to the detention of interpreter Meenu Batra and are urging you to take action.

Meenu Batra, a fellow linguist, has been detained by ICE. She is not a criminal, nor is she here illegally. She is a highly skilled court interpreter who has spent decades assisting people within the legal system. But ICE decided to arrest her anyway.

A clip from The New York Times reads: "But only the entities that officially paid the tariffs are eligible to recover that money. That means that the fuller universe of people affected by Mr. Trump’s policies — including millions of Americans who paid higher prices for the products they bought — are not able to apply for direct relief.

The extent to which consumers realize any gain hinges on whether businesses share the proceeds, something that few have publicly committed to do. Some have started to band together in class-action lawsuits in the hopes of receiving a payout."

The average American family paid $1,700 in tariffs last year, according to the bipartisan Congressional Joint Economic Committee. Few will ever see any of that money back. The refunds will go to companies, if doled out at all. What a joke.

Amazon, which saved $4B in taxes under Trump's Big Ugly Bill, has cut 30,000 jobs since last October.

Verizon, which saved $2B, plans to cut 15,000 jobs this year.

Meta, which saved $3B, plans to lay off 20% or more of its workforce.

Trickle-down economics is a cruel joke.

If Dems retake either house, they must launch an investigation into this. There's no easier way to highlight the corruption of this era and to establish that Dems are committed to fighting it.

Pretty sure @wyden.senate.gov and Maxine Waters would be the chairs to do it.

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldn’t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

I fear that we'll get yet another muted media and public response, because this is a domestic violence situation.

When murder, even mass murder, is about domestic violence, it's not taken as seriously as violence at the hands of a stranger.

What will it take for us to realize it's just as bad?

We all known A*azon tends to sell books bellow list prices, but I've recently found them selling books at below WHOLESALE prices. I know this because I own a store. That's fucked up.
Anyways, support your local book stores. Shit's tough.

Ask yourself if this person deserves to be in a position of power

Ask yourself whether you think he lied in order to obtain this position

North Carolina election board’s GOP majority approves sharing voter data with DHS Voting rights advocates have long warned the SAVE system was not designed for voter list maintenance and can incorrectly flag eligible citizens.

🚨BREAKING: The North Carolina State Board of Elections’s Republican majority voted to move forward with using a federal immigration database to check the state’s voter rolls — an escalation in the board’s ongoing effort to scrutinize voter rolls that could put eligible voters at risk.

If current cuts to the Federal Science Budget proposed by the White House are approved by Congress, that will far-and-away be the largest cut to science since the United States began funding it.

Republicans & Democrats alike know there’s no surer path to Making America Not-Great.

Important context here:

The men were not pardoned.

They filed suit to have their convictions thrown out. The DOJ would normally oppose this, as the original prosecutors.

But to do that… they’d have to assert the men committed sedition… on behalf of Donald Trump.

So instead, they just fold.
