you know how dogs/wolves that are lower on the totem pole in a pack will grovel by licking the jaws of their pack leader? hybrid pack!141 being especially reckless on a mission and shivering in their seats on the transport back to base, unable to take their eyes off a furious price’s mouth

Simon is always there to catch him when he falls.

Just like Price had for him.

Days where he can be surrounded by nothing but friends-- family, yet feel like the loneliest person on Earth. Where it felt like all the colour had been sucked from the world, leaving nothing but grey hues and muted black. Like the world was ending and he was the sole reason and cause of it.

His shoulder gets wet in seconds-- he doesn't mind that either. He knows better than to ask why Price is upset, or why he's started crying. Knows that sometimes there isn't a reason-- that asking is like asking the sun why it rises and sets. The stars why they shine.

Price has his days.

"You okay?"

Price's face wrinkles a certain way, eyes creasing in the corners like he's constipated. Simon knows it's because he's about to cry.

"C'mere." He does most of the work to pull Price into a hug but doesn't mind, rubbing a hand up and down a shaking spine, massaging quivering shoulders.

Heard but not acknowledged.

"John. Look up for me, love?" He tries again, hoping an endearment might soothe the atmosphere a little. He reaches out, cupping Price's cheek in his large hand. "You solid?"

He considers what to ask next, then says it anyway despite already predicting the answer.

Where he knew they wouldn't be disturbed, and he closes the door behind Price and stood in place as he watches Price all but drag his feet into the room. He'd dropped bad, then, if he didn't even have the energy to lift his feet.

"Captain?" A grunt to show he had been heard.

of not rousing concern or suspicion. With Simon being the one to prompt their exit, any concern would have been more aimed towards him rather than their Captain. Good.

He doesn't look back to see if Price was following, he knew he was. He guides him back to the safety of his office.

He receives a thumbs up in response. Good man.

"Captain, a word." Simon made sure to phrase it like a statement rather than a question. With how quickly Price stood up, he knew the older man was itching for an excuse to leave the loud mess hall-- forcing himself to remain for the sake

Simon can sense the mood drop. From how easily aggravated Price had been in the morning, to how quiet he had become in the hours following-- right down to the watery mess of his eyes.

"Finish my tray, Sergeant." Simon murmurs to Johnny, patting him on the shoulder.

He was only half listening to the conversation shared between the Sergeants, eyes locked onto where Price sat opposite him, staring down at his tray and stabbing uselessly at a floret of rubbery broccoli. Simon tilted his head, taking in the sight of Price's eyes.

Today was one of /those/ days.

He was the electricity in the air before lightning illuminated the sky. The rain that followed the thunder. Equally as destructive in his own right, but was able to balance Price where the other man couldn't.

"Food tastes like piss." Johnny said to Simon's left and the Mancunian grunted.

he was volatile and self destructive. Pulling others closer and then lashing out when they got too close to his flames. Warm one minute, scalding the next. Like he sometimes couldn't regulate himself-- didn't know how to.

But where Price was the fire-- Ghost was the storm that quenched the flames.

Simon liked that fact just as much as Kate did, which is why he took it upon himself to be the kind of man Price had been for him after Roba. Whether he liked it or not.

Price was like a wildfire when he was like this. Hot to the touch, burning anything that got in his way--

Not as though he didn't trust them, far from, he was just more used to burying it in the ground much like Simon had been all those years ago. Price was so used to dealing with things alone that he would bite someone's head off if they so much as tried to soothe his raging fires.

Listening to how his voice would snap more often-- growled low like a feral, cornered, beast. Gaz and Soap had learned early on to avoid their Captain's wrath on. Rightfully so, but they never saw the problem deeper on the surface. Then again, Price would never let them get close enough.

Unfortunately Price never seemed to follow his own advice. Content on letting the water level rise until he was drowning in it. Simon supposed that was where he stepped in. He was good at that. People watching. Listening.

Watching the way Price's eye would twitch when he was annoyed.

Sometimes hours or even days before John was any the wiser to his brain chemistry betraying him. Simon acknowledged the irony of it. Price forcing him to talk about his feelings, either to his Captain or a trained professional. To practice self care. Voicing limits or concern-- /communicating/.

Simon almost always catches it long before Price himself has cottoned on to it. Years of therapy and self reflection helped Simon become far more attuned to not only his own emotions, but to that of those around him-- his Captain especially. He could see a drop or a swing from a mile away.

#GazPrice / #PriceGaz where they really do check one another's Ghillie suits at the end of the Recon By Fire Mission and Price is pleasantly surprised to find out that Gaz's suit /is/ indeed wet because Gaz got off to the sound of his voice across comms, murmuring directions in his ear :)
