Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.

At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.

Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

'The theory behind augmentation has a major flaw: Evolution capped how much information can flow from the brain to the body, associate professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison Kip Ludwig told The Verge. “In reality, we’re limited by our own physiology...Evolution did a great job.”'

It’s a tough balance! Ruthless prioritization, making clear goals, and letting go of other goals that may not be as important. And having faith in the long-term accomplishments vs short term. And lots of coffee!!

Wait… localized norepinephrine transients in the awake visual cortex?!
Who would have guessed this neuromodulatory signal is that spatially precise, right where visual processing is happening. Brain state control just got a lot more local. @ruedigersarah.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Computational framework to predict and shape human–machine interactions in closed-loop, co-adaptive neural interfaces - Nature Machine Intelligence Madduri et al. introduce a computational framework grounded in control and game theory to model co-adaptation between users and decoders in neural interfaces. This framework enables a principled desig...

If you're interested in emerging ideas in neural interfaces, I humbly suggest my lab's latest: www.nature.com/articles/s42...

Neural interfaces create dynamic interactions between the brain & devices. This means mean we need new engineering approaches beyond typical ML to "decode" a static brain

Delays in grant awards and funding calls worry NIH researchers Many programs may be pushed into the next fiscal year, and some could face funding gaps

"Since Trump took office 13 months ago, NIH has posted only 84 NOFOs, down from 787 in the previous year. Many more are in limbo. NIH has 323 opportunities listed as 'forecasted.' ... many on the list were announced in 2024 and ’25 and still are not open."

Trump is lying.

This is why it's not enough for Congress to just appropriate funds to scientific agencies. How the funds are or are not spent and when they are spent needs to be enforced.

The administration is playing games with our taxpayer dollars, when they should be going towards scientific innovation.

I think this is a *super* important paper - if this result can be replicated with other regions or tasks then this may come to form our core understanding of credit assignment signals in the neocortex!

FCC Fast-Tracks SpaceX's Plan for 1M Satellites. And It Wants Your Thoughts Usually, the commission takes weeks or months to respond to a filing, but it kicked off a public comment period for SpaceX's orbital data center plan in just a few days.

"For perspective, only 14,500 satellites are currently in orbit. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk now wants to dramatically increase that number by about 70 times, raising questions about the environmental toll from the required rocket launches and the potential for space debris."

At NIH, "grant awards must be approved by presidential political appointees. Review steps have been added throughout the agency, from review of contracts, review of formerly-perfunctory employee term renewals, review of travel, and even review of weekly money disbursements to grantees"
What a joke.

Walz: "To Americans who are watching this, I've got a question for you: What side do you want to be on? The side of an all powerful federal govt that can kill, injury, menace, & kidnap its citizens off the streets? Or on the side of a nurse at the VA hospital who died bearing witness to such govt?"

📌NOTE: In the final year of Joe Biden's presidency 2 million jobs were created.
In the first year of Trump's presidency 584,000 jobs were created.
This is the weakest annual growth since 2003.
In other words, generationally horrible.

Trump is a terrible president, and an even worse human being.

This is really cool, by increasing neuroplasticity, it enables repair of brain damage. Aka, returning, memory, skills, connections to broken musculoskeletature system.
This, along with vagus nerve stimulation are very intriguing ways to fix what is broken. 🧪🧠

Really, you'll fight it with every tool? Maybe you should have thought of that during the shutdown deal, which contained no punishment for the administration violating the power of the purse and withholding duly appropriated funding.
This is constitutional softball.
