A key point: “GRFPs are one of the most cost-effective ways for NSF to give out money,” Evans says, because the outcome is a trained, promising young scientist and it’s relatively inexpensive.
Major, (+) news. The NSF GRFP is a primary mechanism by which doctoral students are able to fund their research. These students receive a barely-livable stipend to do an enormous volume of scientific work; in exchange, they earn a PhD. 1 reason why academia is actually MORE efficient $ than industry
11/12 Hence, there's circumstantial cues that GRFP awards will be announced this week, in addition to NSF officially and publicly committing to "first half of April" this year.
