Weeding
Chris Guppy

I lean over each barbed thistle, grab hold, pull straight up.
I keep thinking that this time, the weeds won’t grow back.
Surely, If I uproot them over and over from the same spot,
they’ll stop trying.

But they never do. Their tenacity is inspiring.
They never “learn their lesson.” They never “mind their place.”
My borders and rules mean nothing to a life bent on living.

My husband groans about the tedium in the garden.
But what about making a life isn’t tedious?
And what of our tedium isn’t miraculous?

Flowers bloom, food grows from green stalks.
We cook, wash the dishes, make the beds, brush our teeth.
we stay fed and (mostly) healthy, free to love and be loved.
And over each noxious weed, an angel whispers, “Grow!”

Update! Yes, there was a sneaky little cartridge in there, hiding. Got it out with a bit of a mess. But I'm good to go! Thanks so much for all your help.I wouldn't have figured that out without you!

Thank you, guys! I'll look to see if anything is in there! If not, I'll try the spring trick. Y'all rock.

This is as far as the cartridge will go, and there's a gap between the barrel and the tip. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.....

There may have been an empty cartridge in there. But I threw it away, because I'm an idiot. 😕

No, it's a super short barrel....

If I took another cartridge out, I didn't pay attention. 😕 The ones I bought were just standard fountain pen size, same make, Kaweco. The pen itself seems too short. Maybe the sport? My husband got it and has no idea what model, and neither do I. There was no defining text on the box.

Inky fingers and disassembled fountain pen on an ink stained paper towel.

Any seasoned fountain pen users out there? I got a Kaweco pen for Christmas and can't figure out how to use it. 😫 Loose ink leaked everywhere, and the cartridges I bought are too long. Help!

BIG fan of Circe! Read it twice, and I'd do it again. :-)

I love her writing, always, but I'm not crazy about the main character yet.....

I just started that one too!

And also, how did Rubio's ears get so big? The better to hear you with, my dear!

You beautifully articulate how delusional it is to take a piece of nature (i.e., any living being) and declare it/ they/s/he to be not a part of nature.

@restingdinoface.bsky.social I just finished reading When the Earth Was Green, and I'm in tears. I read the Conclusion aloud to myself several times. I'm no scientist. But I'm trained as a writer. And your argument for empathy and diversity is so powerfully and eloquently made, I'm in awe. Thank you
