The United States is destroying itself | Rebecca Solnit The daily news can’t adequately convey the administration’s sabotaging of our government, economy, alliances and environment

"At some point if the ship doesn’t turn around, maybe it will start taking on water or listing badly or hit an iceberg, or perhaps the iceberg has been there all along and is named Donald Trump."

End of an heir-a: The U.K. abolishes aristocrats' right to inherit Parliament seats The British Parliament still has 92 unelected lawmakers who inherit seats by bloodline. They're all older white men. A new law now phases them out, for the first time in nearly 1,000 years.

Senator @vanhollen.senate.gov on Iran war:

“Netanyahu said he’s been waiting 40 years to launch this attack and he finally found an American president stupid enough and reckless enough to do it.”

He nailed it.

Repost if you agree with him that he has no plan to protect our troops or get us out!

Gamblers trying to win a bet on Polymarket are vowing to kill me if I don’t rewrite an Iran missile story Bettors are using death threats to try to get The Times of Israel's military correspondent to change his report on a missile impact in central Israel. This is his alarming account

We need to end prediction markets for government action. NOW.

This bone chilling story about a reporter’s life threatened bc he simply reported on Iran missile strikes:

“After you make us lose $900,000 we will invest no less than that to finish you.”

UFC Fighters to Train FBI Agents in ‘Historic Seminar’ This Week: We’ll ‘Be Even Better Prepared to Protect the American People,’ Kash Patel Says UFC fighters will head to Quantico, Va. this week to train FBI agents and students in what FBI director Kash Patel is calling a "historic seminar."

What a joke. FBI agents are not street brawlers. They interview witnesses, uncover documents, analyze intelligence, and testify in court, usually while wearing a suit and tie. Just one more frolic for Kash at taxpayer expense.

This is my take after 30 years of working in politics, law, and journalism at all levels and in countless different roles.

Here's my bottom line:

Much of what they are doing is bad.
Much of what they are doing is unpopular.
Pushback is working.
We are winning.
Keep fighting.
Be creative.
Push for what you'd want.
Allow for insiders and outsiders.
Realize that change takes time.
Reduce harm in the meantime.

The Scale of Billionaires’ Campaign Donations is Overwhelming U.S. Politics

The New York Times published an extraordinary study of the role of billionaires in politics earlier this week, that naturally got lost in everything that is going on, including in Iran.
Here is a gift link to the article, and a few select quotes:

Do I Have the Right to Film ICE? Despite government attacks against protesters and the press, documenting interactions with law enforcement and federal agents is protected by the First Amendment. Here’s what you need to know.

Yes.

ICE agents don't get to carve out a First Amendment exception for themselves.

ICE detainee in Arizona dies after not receiving medical attention for severe tooth pain Emmanuel Damas, a Haitian asylum seeker, was being held at the Florence correctional center before he died

A Haitian asylum seeker detained by ICE died after being refused timely medical attention for a severe toothache.

At least 40 people have died in ICE custody since Trump took office — a two-decade high.

The monstrous cruelty of Trump's police state knows no bounds.

US military spent $9 million on crab legs and lobster in the months before Iran war Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also authorized the $100,000 purchase of a Steinway & Sons grand piano for the Air Force chief of staff’s home, according to a watchdog report

I used to work for the government. In order to justify budgets, bad actors overspend at the end of the fiscal year. So the administration spent $93B on bullshit to justify massive Pentagon budget proposals, all while gutting health care and food assistance. www.the-independent.com/news/world/a...

After revelations that companies like Ring have been selling home security footage to ICE, the most common defense of keeping a camera up seems to be, “But what if I’m stalked?”

And as a violence researcher, I’m just here to state for the record that police do not care about your security footage.

The Trump administration is gearing up to kick an estimated six million more people off of food assistance programs — including nearly two million children.

The move would save just $1 billion a year, while Trump spends upwards of $1 billion per *day* on his new forever war.

Priorities.
