“Applications for grants for home-energy upgrades have nearly doubled since last year. Amid the energy crisis created by the war in the Middle East, 29,000 applications have been processed in the first three months of this year - an increase of 96%.”

Why is Irish electricity so expensive? Economists from the ESRI crunched the numbers - and generating a large share of our electricity using gas is a big factor. jrnl.ie/7011725t

Sinéad O'Sullivan: We need a national strategy for the fuel crisis. Here are four things we can do now
“We should spend every penny we can on roof insulation. Whatever kind of place you’re living in, regardless of whatever else you do or don’t do, everyone in the country should have a really good insulated roof because that’s where you lose most of your heat.”

March saw some of the lowest ever CO₂ emissions in Irish electricity 🏭️ ☀️
What's driving decarbonisation on the Irish grid, and what are some of the threats?

Map of Stoneybatter showing there are now 11 BikeBunkers in Stoneybatter.
Great to see we now have 11 BikeBunkers around Stoneybatter - but it would be great to see a LOT more!
That’s just 55 (?) bike spaces to serve thousands of people living in small properties, most without gardens.
You can find out more or register interest here:

An additional 189 megawatts of wind and solar capacity was connected to the electricity grid during the first two months of this year
Investing in public retrofitting and renewable energy (rather than arms) would not only reduce emissions and household bills, it would make us far less vulnerable to spiking energy prices due to war.

Meanwhile, the price remains unchanged of the 173,000 terawatts of the sun's energy (10,000 times more than humans use) that is continuously striking Earth at every moment.
Meanwhile, Spain's massive investment in renewables is paying dividends now: with prices for Spanish industry and consumers low and stable compared with other European economies.

🚨 A historic double-header for the Irish grid today with two major records broken:
- this morning, battery discharge reached almost 500MW, or roughly 8% of electricity demand 🔋
- just after 12pm, solar output exceeded 1GW (roughly 20% of demand) for the very first time ☀️
Much more to come!

Renewable generation and discharging storage equalled 74% of yesterday's electricity demand, with a peak of 88% at 17:45. Fossil fuel generation (mostly gas) equalled 24% of demand. 3% of generation was exported, 5% of demand was met by imports.

Europe’s energy transition is well underway but it is far from uniform.
In 25 European countries, non-fossil fuel sources now generate the majority of electricity, a clear sign of how deeply clean power has penetrated the system.
The number of people unable to pay their electricity bills rose to almost 320,000 in December last year, an increase of just over 20% on the previous year.
