Every Artist Has a Favorite Subject. For Some, That’s Math. At the annual Bridges conference, mathematical creativity was on dazzling display.

AMS member Siobhan Roberts explores the Bridges conference, in her New York Times article, "Every Artist Has a Favorite Subject. For Some, That’s Mathm," featuring AMS members Henry Segerman's (Oklahoma State University) and David Reimann's (Albion College) art. ow.ly/LkrV50XbTB6

The cover of "An invitation to Real Analysis." The bottom half depicts a fair but not cloudless sky edged in the bottom corners by reaching branches of tall oaks tinged with spring green. A torus wrapped by a blue-and-cyan solenoid curve of slope pi fills the sky.

"An Invitation to Real Analysis" should be out in October. I hope the book helps students around the globe learn real analysis for many years into the future. In any event, telling this story of numbers, sets, sequences, and functions is something I got to do in My Time Here.

The title is from the same phrase popularized in the 1960s by R. Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller. Fuller also popularized the geodesic dome, which has a related construction. This work is based on the 2,1-Goldberg polyhedron where the edges have been replaced with rhombic pieces of colored corrugated plastic. This piece is an abstract model of the Earth make from 210 pieces: 60 green pieces and 150 blue pieces. About 71% of the pieces are blue, which is about the same percentage of the Earth's surface covered by water. We are individuals, yet travel through space together, inhabitants on and caretakers of the same tiny planet we call Earth.
