When we were doing Minnesota-Nebraska game retrospectives leading up to The Chair game this year, we read a lot of old sports writing.
It was compelling, artistic writing that sometimes genuinely could be counted as literature! We’ve lost something by the demise of this style.
A vintage black-and-white group photograph of a early hockey team, likely from the late 19th or early 20th century. Eleven men are posed in three rows: five standing in the back, four seated in the middle row, and two seated on the floor in front. Most players wear dark long-sleeved jerseys with a prominent white "V" emblem on the chest, knee-length pants, and skates or boots. They hold long wooden hockey sticks across their laps or shoulders. In the center front, a man in a formal suit and tie sits holding a pocket watch, flanked by two large silver trophies on pedestals and a smaller cup on the floor. The overall style is a formal team portrait with serious expressions.
On this day in 1896, the Montreal Victorias defeated the Winnipeg Victorias 6-5 to win the Stanley Cup. Played at the Granite Rink in Winnipeg, it was the first Stanley Cup challenge game played outside of Montreal. Ernie McLea recorded the first hat trick in Stanley Cup play.
