today’s talk is about top-down effects on perception (it’s back!), so of course i ate an el greco burrito beforehand

sorry @talboger.bsky.social i don't think we can publish this paper

1. change the reference to say "abstract" (but that's inaccurate!)

2. keep the reference as "absract" (accurate but looks like we made a mistake!)

3. "absract [sic]" (but in a references section? it almost sounds mean or something)

Several entries from a references section of a manuscript. The title of the first entry is "The relationship between aesthetic preference and visual complexity in absract art".

Screenshot of the original paper, whose title is in fact "The relationship between aesthetic preference and visual complexity in absract art"

Conundrum of the day:

The references section for your accepted-in-principle manuscript has an obvious typo in it ('absract' should clearly be 'abstract'). But no, the typo is in the original paper title! WHAT DO YOU DO

We think this cool study we found is flawed. Help us reproduce it. Are 25 year olds really more random than 60 year olds?

A few years ago, my favorite website (@puddingviz.bsky.social) put out this great piece analyzing a study of how randomizing ability changes with age. It includes demos where readers produce sequences of random coin flips, dice rolls, and locations in a 3x3 grid. pudding.cool/2022/04/rand...

When something doesn't work properly, can your dog tell if the object is broken or if you just don't know how to use it?

I'm pleased to share my group @jhu.edu's first study with pet dogs (!!), now out in @plosone.org

Led by Amalia Bastos: Do dog rationally infer the causes of failed actions? 1/4

Introducing “Pretend Battleship”: you’re told where all the ships are but then have to play like you never got that information. Could you do it? And what would your performance reveal about your understanding of your own mind? A joy to be part of this creative project led by @matanmazor.bsky.social

I'm with you — I've been in Jorge withdrawal for years 😭

❤️ the best news!! For Jorge, Duke, and the field as a whole. Jorge & his work are absolutely incredible, not least because he sets an example for the rest of us of how to do deep & impactful work across disciplines. Jealous of Duke phil+psych+neuro community for scoring such an excellent colleague!!
