There are CUs in the UK and the difference between a CU and a bank is the ownership is the depositors/account holders at a CU and not any stockholders like a bank. Moving money away from big banks is still a good step. The philosophy of the CU movement is "people helping people" for a reason.

Every credit union is different and has different goals. Not all of them have the objective of doing home loans. Traditional banks poorly serve the market mentioned in the quoted post and a credit union focused on serving them would be amazing.
