if there are features about social media that are harmful to children (algorithmic content recommendation, infinite scroll etc.) maybe just ban those features for everyone instead of requiring easily circumvented ID checks.

Not sure I can really enjoy Petrarch after a lifetime of pop feminism analysis, but also my boy was so whiny I'm not sure I ever would have enjoyed him.

for a story at The Guardian, I'm looking to speak to 1-2 people who have had their community/ political organizing work impacted by being expected or forced to organize with someone who assaulted or harassed them, and that staying silent was "for the good of the movement"
I know this is an extremely common story, but also one people can't always share with their name or face: anonymity or pseudonyms will be provided.
I am trained in trauma-informed strategies in working with survivors, am a survivor myself, and take digital hygiene and sources' security extremely seriously.
Please reach out over signal @ lex_mcmenamin.68 . I'll take this down when I have enough folks. Thank you.

for a story at the Guardian, I'm interviewing folks who were asked to keep working with someone after sexual assault or harassment or relationship abuse, and told to stay silent "for the good of the movement" (more info in pic with alt text).

The quality of @yaelwrites.com 's work speaks for itself, but I can speak to how fun it is to work on projects with Yael! Do yourself a favor and get your company or nonprofit to hire her! Alternatively, if you're a funder, throw a grant our way so we can keep working on security and privacy ed!

A bittersweet announcement: I was impacted by the layoffs at Consumer Reports, alongside a number of extremely talented colleagues.

I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity and so proud of the work we did fighting for consumers and helping people stay safer online.

this may be the boston townie in me - the quality of education and the quality of students at Harvard is pretty low (and I've taken some classes there, officially and unofficially).

I'm so glad Pessoa et al. are finally getting their recognition. Cowards try to be great poets. The weak try to inspire a literary movement in their style. Pessoa, reaching for the stars and crashing so hard into the moon he knocked it off course, tried to write the whole movement himself.

It is time to talk about a real problem within trans journalism. Breathless, fearmongering posts that wildly exaggerate a danger — or make one up entirely — while being incredibly vague about actual threats and ways to resist.

As TNN's @davidforbes.bsky.social termed it: panicslop. So, a 🧵

Look at these charts. TransUnion and Experian, two of the three major credit bureaus, have started dismissing a larger share of consumer complaints without help. The timing coincides with the Trump administration’s dismantling of the CFPB. www.propublica.org/article/cred... @joeljacobs.bsky.social

Great question!

The simplest answer is to have the broadest possible conception of what “philosophy” is and does. Teach kids to love inquiry, to ask questions, and to explain what they mean. Teach them that other worlds are possible. Teach them that adults can be wrong and admit it.

thanks so much for the thoughtful and detailed answer!!

I'm not sure if I'm phrasing this right, but it seems by the time many people are old enough to engage in philosophy, we're already wrapped up in ressentiment or micro-fascisms. What pre-philosophical pedagogy can help kids avoid these pitfalls or grapple with this stuff better and more quickly?

It is true that Proton is located in Switzerland and responded to a legal request from the Swiss authorities. But it is also true that most people do not know what an MLAT is and there is a widespread misunderstanding that using Proton will protect your account from US govt requests.

Prediction Marketing The prediction market boom is liquidity extraction before a liquidity crisis.

Ahead of the State of the Union address, I wanted to share my thoughts on the credulous coverage of “prediction markets” and the grim economic structure that coverage has ignored. Prediction market platforms are a pit stop on a crisis…. ayeshaasiddiqi.substack.com/p/prediction...
