Astronomers and astronomy fans: Why is it that sometimes you can see the outline of the dark part of the (not full) moon at night and sometimes you can’t see it at all?🌖

Sorry if this is a stupid question🙋

There are no pictures of me on the internet. Then i visited my sister and she wanted to show me a picture of me and all she had to do was look for my name in her phone and find all pictures I was in. They were all tagged by facial recognition. I don't use any google stuff. Other people do :(((((((

Remember: embracing good, useful, life-saving technology is just as important as rejecting bad, useless, destructive technology.

Especially when you consider how such individual choices lead to knock on effects and outcomes.

Calm down, computer software isn't making decisions about who lives and who dies in war. It merely processes a ton of data and then makes a recommendation to a human who has no realistic way to verify it

Chinese Overseas Student Numbers Drop to a Decade Low With outbound numbers retreating to 2016 levels and post-grad returnees reaching an eight-year high, shifting global dynamics are rapidly reshaping China’s talent flow

Caixin: "570,600 Chinese students went abroad in 2025. The figure represents a decline of nearly 20% from the historical peak of 703,500 in 2019, bringing the scale of outbound students back to around 2016 levels."

What keeps coming up again and again is the risk of AI is really the flattening and erasure of plural forms of knowledge and capability with one way of doing things. To appropriate the Zapatista slogan, we need a world where many worlds not only fit but thrive and flourish

seven months on beehiiv, by the numbers was leaving substack worth it?

There's a lot of talk about leaving Substack & whether it will be the death-knell of your newsletter. I have been on Beehiiv for 7 months now & @tlpavlich.gay helped me run some numbers. So, was leaving Substack worth it? The answer, for me, has been a resounding "yes."

Here are the hard numbers:

Palantir raises more red flags when you learn the CEO, Alex Karp is obsessed with speaking in German and describes himself as a socialist but doesn't believe in any leftist economic policies.

You yourself can choose not to use Google Photos or at least not opt-in when it comes to the Gemini AI connection, but it's all pointless IF people who have photos of you or your kids etc on Google Photos and they opt-in. Good times! 🙃 /s #GenAI

I never knowingly started to use Google Photos. Having read this news today, I went to check, and I have photos there! I was likely unknowingly backing them up there. (Have since unticked the back up option.)

Obviously need to delete them and disable the poxy app. I thought I wasn't even using it!

“You have 3 different scenes, [a] shooting occurred just down the road here, the 300 block of West 79th…There’s also another shooting related to this on Harrison St, & then there’s an adjacent residence on West 79 where one of the victims ran to after the shooting.”

10 shot, 8 dead, by 1 angry man.

Turns Out +++ Men Still Need Help Understanding How the Fucking Patriarchy Is to Blame in 2026 This newsletter post is the author's attempt at reclaiming her time even further after another unproductive discussion with men about the patriarchy with which they remain complicit, as she continues ...

"The United Nations estimates that 50,000 women & girls were killed by intimate partners or family members in 2024, which breaks down to about 1 every 10 minutes..., so I know that prioritizing men's hurt feelings over our use of the term, "patriarchy" will only result in more [of our] deaths..."💔💔💔

Increasingly impossible to exist at all without a tech company claiming control or ownership over you, your identity, and/or any information about you.

And, no, "just stay offline" isn't really a solution. We've all but made living without using the internet impossible.

We need a better compact.

Google Starts Scanning All Your Photos As New Update Goes Live Google wants its AI to see all the photos of "you and your loved ones." Billions of users must now decide.

“Take a moment to think before you dive in. That’s the best advice for Google Photos users, as the company confirms its latest update can scan all your photos to “use actual images of you and your loved ones” in AI image generation.”

So if someone opts in, and has taken photos of friends, relatives, kids, even strangers, they’re “giving permission” on behalf of all those people. So lots of people have no say in this.

The whole “opt in” thing was always a charade but it’s approaching terminal nonsense at this point.

This continual bombardment from a catastrophically failing money sink is so aggressively anti-human, anti-creator and anti-life that CEOs should absolutely be held accountable when they decide to farewell it.

'If we take more we can make it better' like some bank robbers promising one last job.
