When Dolores Huerta, herself a legend in the labor organization arena, came forward with her experiences earlier this year, the right thing to do became clear.
I appreciate Ward 5 city councilmember Pearll Warren for proposing this name change, and the city staff for moving the resolution.
As a person of Latine descent, I grew up hearing the hagiography of Cesar Chavez. My father was a proud union worker and labor organizer. Cesar Chavez was someone my dad wanted me to be proud of. And for a long time, I was.
But as is so often the case, other people’s stories remained hidden.
I’m happy to report that along with @aurinmpls.bsky.social and @angelaconley.bsky.social, I was part of the unanimous vote of the Planning Commission to remove the name of Cesar Chavez from the Minneapolis street carrying his name today.

sd63, another DFL convention where police were called after emily koski / jamison whiting / emma greenman’s stalker showed up, attempted to steal signs, then drove around roosevelt with a bullhorn yelling nonsense. the responding officer was named “I OMAR.” can’t make this up
christin crabtree for school board at large was a young mom and MPS gave her a community. in 2022 during the strike she helped form minneapolis families for public schools for families to organize. saw how critical MPS community was during operation metro surge

Mainly because the same CMs that feel we should be “focused on other issues,” have not brought policy forward this year with their name on it to address their purported “more important priorities.” It’s just posturing without doing any of the work. Maybe better to write some policy, then complain.
