Arbitrary vetoes of new housing are the true moral crisis Opposition to Marina Safeway project reflects a broader pattern of blocking new housing, worsening affordability and limiting access to high-resource neighborhoods.

The San Francisco Examiner published my op-ed in support of housing and the Marina Safeway project!

A response to another piece declaring YIMBYism a "moral myth." I work for a friggin Center for Ethics in Society, so naturally wasn't gonna sit this one out...

Tell your state legislator member: fix the real e-bike problem California's legislature is in a panic about e-bikes. But with 9 bills moving this session, they're mostly targeting the wrong thing. The crashes making headlines? They're overwhelmingly caused by ill...

Sacramento, including my assembly member @matthaneysf.bsky.social, is pushing a number of bills which punishes the vast majority of law abiding and safe e-bike riders, lumping them in with dangerous and negligent riders.

If you live in California and have a stake in this, sign this petition:

Same zoning map but with high miami level height limits.

For height-phobic NIMBYs who fear we are "turning San Francisco into Miami," here's an actual rendering of the recently passed Family Zoning Plan.

Thanks to @foglinesf.bsky.social

the feeling of membership to abstract political movements beyond your immediate control. Such is what explains NIMBYism. In his words a "Verbalist Elite," which even has me wondering how much I am guilty of such behavior without noticing. I am afterall, posting this on Bsky.

Even so, why has the college-educated middle class generally failed to participate in concrete local committees where they might work to ad- dress issues such as environmental policy or civil rights? The answer is also, of course, self-interest, in the form of NIMBYism (Not In My Back- Yard). For someone who cares about environmental protection or racial justice, it's easier to sign a petition or send in a donation to an organi- zation in Washington supporting liberal positions than to face one's neighbors and deal with the issue in one's own backyard.26 It's easier for parents to let their children skip school to march in sup- port of national and international climate action than to let them skip school to demand serious and immediate changes from their own cities and towns. Carol's county Democratic committee in Oregon takes positions in municipal races because it wants to push the agenda its members care about at the local level. But other local party committees don't do that because the professional class of liberals who dominate local Democratic groups either aren't themselves on board with economic, environ- mental, and racial policy priorities when it comes to local politics or else they do not want to face their immediate neighbors on those issues.
