Duvall had an innate sense of how to physically embody a character in terms of body language, posture and gestures.
I didn’t even notice that he didn’t duck for cover first time I saw Apocalypse Now.

Frederick Wiseman, 96, Penetrating Documentarian of Institutions, Dies He exposed abuses in films like “Titicut Follies,” a once-banned portrait of a mental hospital, but ranged widely in subject matter, from a Queens neighborhood to a French restaurant.

Frederick Wiseman, a director whose rigorously objective explorations of social and cultural institutions constitute one of the more revered bodies of work in American documentary filmmaking, died on Monday. He was 96. nyti.ms/4qGpq55

RIP Frederick Wiseman and thank you for your films. Great filmmaker and a giant of an example of what it means to maintain full control over your creative work. Bought these from his distribution company Zipporah Films that he created to distribute his own documentaries. Love and respect.

TV tonight: a remarkable film about a Soviet-era sanatorium This fascinating documentary will linger in the mind after watching. Plus: Aimee Lou Wood’s will-they-won’t-they drama concludes. Here’s what to watch this evening

'Sanatorium' airs tonight on BBC Storyville. Having something I cut on the Storyville strand has long been a major ambition/weird obsession of mine. So I'm chuffed about this. It's on tonight at 10 and on iPlayer after. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

If anyone’s planning to go to the cinema this weekend, make it your business to see Sanatorium. Fingers crossed it will represent us at the Oscars - and honestly, it’s just a truly gorgeous film. And cinematic.

I was singing its praises on Arena last week:

The IFI is doing a Margo Harkin retrospective season all throughout Sept.

Margo has long been one of Irelands most important and influential filmmakers & this season is a rare opportunity to see her most vital works.

It opens with 'Stolen' this Tuesday which I was honoured to cut a few year back.
