Buttigieg: "Trump's political operation was raising money off images at a dignified transfer. Any politician who does that has no business leading American troops into war. If the president is willing to raise campaign funds over the bodies of America's war dead, he's unfit to be commander in chief"

Economic warfare, even of the most “kinetic” blowing up bits of your opponent’s economy sort, works slowly.
It adds cumulative costs to the enemy’s ability to fight. It is not about knock-out blows.
Seizing or destroying the facilities at Kharg does not instantly end Iran’s ability to fight.

Alan Johnson backs Bridget Phillipson for next Labour deputy The former home secretary said that the No 10 favourite was one of the party’s ‘star performers’ and her rival Lucy Powell would ‘destabilise’ the leadership

Deeply proud to be backed by Alan Johnson, a giant of the Labour movement.

The deputy leadership is a choice between a strong government true to our values and ready to win again, or the divided party for which Farage is desperate.

A Twitter DM from June 2022 reads:

Hi Mollie, I hope you're well. Just sending a message to say thanks. Early this year you tweeted a Guardian Blind Date, where the guy dragged the girl a little bit. After seeing a couple of people saying some pretty shit things about her on Twitter, I DM'd her to balance it out a bit - just say I thought she came across as really funny and fuck the haters etc (but with no other real intention other than that).
Well we hit it off, talked every day for a month (I was working out of the UK at the time) and agreed to meet as soon as I returned. I ended up coming home early and we've been dating ever since. It might sound a bit over the top but l've never felt like this about anyone else before, and I'm pretty sure she feels the same way. I've honestly had some of the best months of my life with her around, and I want to say thanks

A Twitter DM from tonight reads:

Hey Mollie, I hope you don't mind an update on the above.
I asked her if she'd marry me, she said yes!
She's my world.
I'm so incredibly thankful for you tweeting that thing that led me and meet - I'm eternally in your debt.
Thanks!

This is an impressive, intellectually honest decision.

The loan takes into account savings already identified. Indeed might not have got the loan otherwise. We set aside money for those who can't pay, made sure that everyone is notified of help to claim benefits and also access to job training. More cuts would fall on poorest: kids and elderly in care

Elon Musk just called Social Security a Ponzi scheme, so it’s worth reiterating: All functional retirement schemes, public or private, pre funded or pay as you go, are claims on future production - there's just no way, at scale, of storing current production for use during retirement

UK 10 year bond yields have risen 14 basis points in the last month. Germany's have risen by 30 bp and the USA's by 21 bp, confirming both the fickleness of markets and the media. #soundmoney

Simple story: causes of diminished support for left parties and rise of populists/far right are affecting many countries, but US two-party system (because of our electoral rules) and counter-majoritarian institutions that boost the right make the consequences more dramatic here - at least for now

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan Freezes Bus Fares For Sixth Time
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan Freezes Bus Fares For Sixth Time YouTube video by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan

For the sixth time since becoming Mayor in 2016, I’m freezing bus fares in London.

More people use the bus in our city than any other form of public transport. Freezing these fares will help Londoners on lower incomes struggling with the cost of living.

Is this the least scandalous government ever?

Big political ‘stories’ from the last month:

• A 10-year-old blunder by the transport secretary
• A petition for a general election
• Kemi Badenoch’s lunch order

Shame competence doesn’t write headlines.

Great to discuss devolution and local growth opportunities for our regions at the #NSRegDev event in Manchester last week.

Our English Devolution White Paper will set out our plan for shifting power out of Whitehall with wider and deeper devolution. @newstatesman.com
